Book Description

May 1997
Drawing upon his successful practice and research, William Doherty shows us how to fight entropy at home and in our communities. He offers a practical guide that will help all families to keep open channels of communication, sustain regular involvement with others, and manage conflict. Real-life case studies combined with Doherty's personal experience of family life are used throughout the book to illustrate the best ways to approach daily routines as well as special events like holidays. By carefully cultivating the rituals of connection that bring us together - from family dinners to vacations, from volunteer work to attending religious services, from weekly drives with a teenager to monthly dinners alone with a spouse - every family can become what Doherty calls an Intentional Family.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Doherty, a family therapist for more than 20 years, focuses on strengthening family relationships by creating intentional rituals that will help the family define itself. Doherty acknowledges the various family structures (two-parent, single-parent, stepparent, and extended families) in today's culture and presents guidelines to help families of all types. He examines opportunities for "rituals of connection" during routine activities such as mealtimes or during vacations and "rituals of celebration" for events such as birthdays, anniversaries, or Christmas. His work concludes with suggestions for implementing rituals and a useful bibliography. This unique if somewhat narrow work is recommended for public library parenting collections.?Kay L. This review is from: The Intentional Family: How to Build Family Ties in Our Modern World (Hardcover)
The idea behind this book is sound: form bonds of love within your family by making traditions a greater part of your life. If we were just starting out raising our children, it would have been a very helpful and insightful book. The reality of it is, we have been doing this for years.
