Over 450 databased studies and years of field testing attest to the effectiveness of the Microskills model in INTENTIONAL INTERVIEWING AND COUNSELING: FACILITATING CLIENT DEVELOPMENT IN A MULTICULTURAL SOCIETY! Available with an interactive CD-ROM (which can be packaged with the text), this hallmark text enables students of many backgrounds to master basic skills in a step-by-step fashion, thus rapidly empowering them to conduct a full interview using listening skills. Along the way, they are challenged to re-evaluate their current behaviors and perceptions, thus gaining valuable insight about themselves, their strengths, and the areas where they can develop further. By the time they finish reading the text, they will have the ability to adapt their skills to meet both individual and multicultural uniqueness, conduct interviews using five different theoretical approaches, and be well on their way to developing a personalized style and theory of interviewing and counseling that matches their own aptitudes and affinities.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"A well researched and well written introduction to counseling skills and to multicultural counseling. I very much like the Microskills approach and think it may be the most effective framework to teach peer counselors. I teach on a diverse campus and the book?s emphasis on diversity is very powerful."

"I find this revised book exceptional...It is the first book on counseling techniques that I have read that truly integrates multiculturalism into the basic counseling skills learning process...I believe this book has multiple uses as a basic counseling skills book as well as an excellent multicultural text book. I plan to adopt this book as soon as it is made available to me. I commend the authors for their dedication to making teaching counseling techniques exciting for me again."

5.0 out of 5 stars Novice, May 15, 2001

For a Master's level clinical skills course I was required to read this text. While I initially thought it was more expensive than I wanted to pay for a textbook, I was pleasantly surpised that it was well worth the price. Not only did I learn skills, that I thought I had already mastered (a little cocky uh?) but I learned skills I didn't possess. I have since graduated and am working in the field, yet I still find it a useful resource and as a reminder not to get too cocky because one always can use REMINDERS about how to do something well!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook and resource, January 17, 2006

(REAL NAME)
I used this book in a Counseling Practicum course and was greatly impressed by the organization of the book, the vast number of examples, the clarity of the definitions, and topics covered. In particular, this book really addresses the complexity of doing counseling in a multicultural world and discusses the role of one's cultural worldview in how we make decisions and interpretations in counseling sessions. The exercises throughout each chapter are an excellent opportunity to practice the different skills and the process notes and comments are helpful in understanding the counseling dynamics. I also appreciated the way in which the authors' (Drs. Allen and Mary Ivey) share their own perspectives and experiences throughout the book. I would highly recommend this book to people in helping professions, students, instructors, therapists, etc. I also received very positive feedback from students in my course about this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The difference between a bartender and a counselor!, March 13, 2002
This book is an excellent resource for the beginning counseling student; a wonderful introduction to the concept of the "intentional interview." This text will aid in mastering basic listening and influencing skills, as well as illustrate how to conduct a full interview using only listening skills.

The authors break down the interviewing process into an easy to understand format, complete with case study illustrations. This book is not only a superb introduction to the intentional interview, it can also serve as a resource for those who are interested in honing their microskills.

After all, this is what marks the difference between a bartender and a counselor!
