About the Author

Allen E. Ivey is a distinguished university professor (emeritus) at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and professor of counseling at the University of South Florida, Tampa (courtesy appointment). He is president of Microtraining Associates, an educational publishing firm. Allen is a diplomate in counseling psychology and was honored as a ?Multicultural Elder? at the National Multicultural Conference and Summit. He is author or co-author of more than 40 books and 200 articles and chapters, translated into 18 languages. He is the originator of the Microskills approach, basic to this book.

Mary Bradford Ivey is Vice President of Microtraining Associates and Courtesy Professor of Counseling, University of South Florida, Tampa. She is a former school counselor for the Amherst, Massachusetts, schools and has served as visiting professor at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst; University of Hawai'i, Manoa; and Flinders University, South Australia. Mary's undergraduate degree in social work and education is from Gustavus Adolphus College, and she has a master's degree in counseling from the University of Wisconsin. She earned her doctorate in organizational development at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Mary is the author or co-author of twelve books, translated into multiple languages, and several articles and chapters. She is a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC) and a licensed mental health counselor (LMHC), and she has held a certificate in school counseling. She has presented workshops and keynote lectures with Allen throughout the world, including Australia, New Zealand, Japan, China, Israel, Greece, Sweden, Canada, Great Britain, Portugal, and Germany. She is also known for her work in promoting and explaining development guidance and counseling in the United States and abroad. Mary received national recognition when her elementary counseling program at the Fort River School was named one of the ten best in the nation at the Christa McAuliffe Conference. For a Master's level clinical skills course I was required to read this text. While I initially thought it was more expensive than I wanted to pay for a textbook, I was pleasantly surpised that it was well worth the price. Not only did I learn skills, that I thought I had already mastered (a little cocky uh?) but I learned skills I didn't possess. I have since graduated and am working in the field, yet I still find it a useful resource and as a reminder not to get too cocky because one always can use REMINDERS about how to do something well!

I used this book in a Counseling Practicum course and was greatly impressed by the organization of the book, the vast number of examples, the clarity of the definitions, and topics covered. In particular, this book really addresses the complexity of doing counseling in a multicultural world and discusses the role of one's cultural worldview in how we make decisions and interpretations in counseling sessions. The exercises throughout each chapter are an excellent opportunity to practice the different skills and the process notes and comments are helpful in understanding the counseling dynamics. I also appreciated the way in which the authors' (Drs. Allen and Mary Ivey) share their own perspectives and experiences throughout the book. I would highly recommend this book to people in helping professions, students, instructors, therapists, etc. I also received very positive feedback from students in my course about this book.

This book is an excellent resource for the beginning counseling student; a wonderful introduction to the concept of the "intentional interview." This text will aid in mastering basic listening and influencing skills, as well as illustrate how to conduct a full interview using only listening skills.

The authors break down the interviewing process into an easy to understand format, complete with case study illustrations. This book is not only a superb introduction to the intentional interview, it can also serve as a resource for those who are interested in honing their microskills.

After all,this is what marks the difference between a bartender and a counselor!
