I picked this up using the amazon lend program, but I will for sure buy it for multiple readings. You can tell the author cares deeply for the subject matter and that shines though when he writes about those hidden classics we may have forgotten over the years. Five stars all the way and I cant wait for his next book.

Butler offers a good overview of the genre. However the thing holding the book back from five stars is the lack of focus as each chapter ends up jumping between around five games, more if we're talking about series.

A freelance arts and entertainment journalist from West Yorkshire in the UK, Mark Butler is a dedicated enthusiast of films, music and video games and writes extensively on these subjects. He is a regular contributor to the Yorkshire Post and Beyond Magazine (www.beyondmags.com), and is also co-founder of online entertainment magazine FMV (www.fmvmagazine.com).

His first book, Interactive Nightmares, is an exploration of the origins and evolution of horror video games, inspired by reading Nightmare Movies by Kim Newman and the resulting realisation that there seemed to be no comparable discussion for horror in the world of video games - despite the medium being so expert at mustering atmosphere, terror and suspense.
