Book Description

April 22, 2012 0321815157 978-0321815156 1
As an industry, interactive is different. The work entails elements of software development, marketing, and advertising, yet it’s neither purely technical nor traditional “agency” work. Delivery methods are different, and because the industry is relatively new, the gap in understanding between the clients buying the work and the teams building it is often wide. Enter the geek girls guide. Nancy Lyons and Meghan Wilker don’t just tell you how to deliver digital work, they demonstrate how to think about it.

Interactive Project Management: Pixels, People, and Process helps clients, agencies, and industry professionals better understand the critical role of interactive project management, and presents a collaborative, people-focused approach to delivering high-quality digital work.

In this book, the authors:
  • Define the unique characteristics of interactive projects
  • Explain the importance of emotional intelligence in the workplace
  • Discuss communication techniques that help teams work together more efficiently
  • Outline a process and specific deliverables that clarify how to think about critical aspects of a project
  • Provide questions, tasks, tips, and advice that effectively move teams from initiation to launch

Editorial Reviews

Review

"At last, the interactive project management book I've been waiting for! With humor, wisdom, and glorious common sense, the authors tackle not just process but the people you depend on for success. Stands head and shoulders above any other book that's been written on the topic." — Kristina Halvorson, Author of Content Strategy for the Web

“Nancy and Meghan take the drudgery out of process and put heart and intention into it. They make a usually dry topic easy to understand.” – Dondeena Bradley, Vice President, Nutrition Ventures, PepsiCo

"Clockwork's process made our site redesign not only manageable, but educational and refreshingly open. They were engaged partners, and expected the same from our team, too. At every step, there was structure, organization, and purpose, which are invaluable qualities for anyone and everyone working on interactive projects." – Jennifer Chrisler,  Executive Director, Family Equality Council

The title says project management, but the book encompasses so much more than that. From approach + philosophy: (Technology doesn't drive projects- people do)- to practical details: (Best time for a site launch? Wednesday. After lunch)- this book contains something every single person in your company or agency will relate to and learn from.

The Geek Girls break down interactive projects, from beginning to end, and share a process that when followed can ensure that everyone on your team (not just the project manager) knows what's been agreed to, what their role is, and how to how to get there. This book should be required reading for everyone working in (and struggling with) Interactive projects- not just project managers.

This book is a must read for anyone who works in project management, inside an organization or in an agency. It provides a solid, tested, clear methodology and framework to bring interactive projects from idea to reality. And most importantly, it is fun to read. You feel like you are getting firsthand advice from insiders and in fact, you are! Unlike most technical business books, this book balances practical, technical advice alongside enduring lessons on leadership, communication and emotional intelligence. Technology is often seen as the cure-all and solution for our businesses, customers and clients. But as the authors explain, the best process considers and centers around the people involved. The Geek Girls once again prove technology is about more than the "pixels" - it's the "pixels, people and process." I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Work in interactive? Read This Book! April 21, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Finally! A book I can use as an interactive PM! I was lucky enough to read an advanced copy of this book and I've already changed and improved my own project process. I really wish this book had come out when I first started as an interactive project manager. It would have saved me a lot of late nights, tears and frustration. Meghan and Nancy have written a great book outlining how a digital project should go (they also recognize that a project never runs exactly as planned). Agencies, clients, account teams, project managers, friends - read this book!
