One of the best books on the subject,

Highly recommend this book for people at all levels of experience. I often give it to instructional designers new to online design. Clear, concise, genuinely helpful -- a well-written, extremely valuable resource for anyone involved in the design and execution of any product using multimedia. On top of all that, it's a visually appealing and well-designed publication.Whether you're an instructional designer, a project manager, a webmaster, an applications developer, or GUI designer, you will probably find something new here that you didn't know. I especially recommend getting this book if you are looking for a tool to help you put together good conceptual presentations of any multimedia, interactive project -- you can step-by-step your way to a complete presentation that will answer every question your audience might have about your product, and make sure you're not leaving any holes in your design at the same time.

Art + Science + Design + Psychology,

This review is from: Interactivity By Design (Paperback)
I'm kind of tired of those dense, cerebral, "engineering by acronym" books produced by apparently brilliant programmers or other computer scientists who are doing, teaching, trying interface design. I am still amazed that these two accomplished this 131 page book in 131 pages (not 550). They did it by practicing what they preach: Integrating text with visuals with links (at least within the constraints of the book artifact). I refer to it often just to refresh myself and remind myself of what I enjoy doing for a living. And I still learn from it too. Perfect as a gift for colleagues.

This is nicely organized, introduces important concepts and explains them in plain english. I used it as a textbook for a multimedia class and it was well received. You will not find fancy tricks and designs, but you will get a good overview of multimedia, interface design and project management. It is 'outdated' so it is not suitable for experts but its information is excellent for an intro class, especially for people with little graphics experience.

This book provides valuable information about the interactive authoring process that is independant of specific authoring tools. The content is presented in a logical manner that is relevant and easy to follow. I recommend this book to all of my students!

Our teacher issued this book as our textbook for our Multimedia Design class. He has been using it for the past few years for all of his multimedia classes because he hasn't found a better one. Don't let the thinness of the book fool you (only about 120 pages.) All I can say is that this is one of the best Multimedia books I've ever seen. Although it was published in 1995, the material still applies to multimedia today. It's very simple and easy to read. It also provides several examples of "great" design and "bad" design by using pictures. (It's true that pictures speak a 1000 words!) For anyone who is interested in being a designer, this is definitely a great book to get.

Simple. Clear. Invaluable.,

For once, someone makes the distinction between information design, interaction design and presentation design. This book was invaluable in helping our division more clearly define our process for product development.

A Jewel of a Design Book,

The design of this book is as educational and stimulating as its excellent content. The writing is crisp, clear, and to the point; supporting graphics inform as much as the words do. Over all is a wonderfully coherent, logical flow of information and examples about the process of multimedia design from inception to conclusion and a stunning, interactive page layout that practices superbly what the book preaches. Not only do I use it in my teaching, but I sometimes pick it up and peruse it for the sheer pleasure of its artistry.

As an interactive designer, working for the educational software industry, I've found this book to be both facinating and meaningful. This book is useful both for beginers and professionals of the new media. The information and processes are being layed out infront of the reader in a simple and structured way. A must for all those who are creating in the digital world.

I have had this book for 4+ years. I loaned it to a friend once who didn't return it, so I bough another one.Among the dozens of books I own and read on usability or project management, etc. this one is fantastic - a real stand-out. The one drawback is that it's not as contemporary/up-to-the-minute as newer books. [shrug] |
