Editorial Reviews

Review

"Following an overview of the textiles industry, fabrics and fibers are discussed, as well as applications for furniture, wall coverings, and other uses." (Book News, February 2008)

From the Back Cover

Create great interior designs with a new understanding of textiles

Learn to use interior textiles to set a mood, establish a theme, and create an ambiance. From soft and subtle to bold and dynamic, Interior Textiles gives you the technical knowledge and skills plus the aesthetic ability needed to fully leverage the potentials of interior textiles. You will be introduced to textile specifications, testing, selection, calculations, and maintenance, as well as the unique properties of individual fabrics. Moreover, you discover sustainable design techniques to design "green."

The text's three parts give you everything you need to create great interior designs for contract and residential interiors:

  • Part I: Fabrics begins with an overview of the textiles industry. Next are detailed discussions of fibers and yarns, including fabric construction, conversion, coloring, and finishing.

  • Part II: Applications guides you to the best choices for specific applications. You learn the hows and whys of textiles for upholstered furniture, slipcovers, wallcoverings, window treatments, linens and accessories, broadloom carpeting, and hand- and machine-made rugs.

  • Part III: Period Styles explores the use of color, pattern, texture, and style to introduce different periods in history. Richly illustrated, this part is divided into chapters covering: Oriental; Formal Traditional; Medieval, Colonial, and Country; Regional and Thematic; and Modern styles.

Many chapters list relevant associations and organizations that can be used as additional resources. A companion Web site at www.wiley.com/go/interiortextiles includes a wealth of supplemental information, including glossaries of terms, historical timelines, and invaluable advice on textile maintenance.

Whether you are a student or a professional interior designer, Interior Textiles opensyour eyes to a wealth of possibilities and gives you the skills to make these possibilities happen.

I bought this book as a supplement to the textbook being used in our classroom (Fabrics for Interiors). The primary text is loaded with full-color pictures but does not really explain the details of fabric choice and application the way Nielsen does in Interior Textiles. A full third of Nielson's book is dedicated to historical styles and how fabric contributed to them, which is not covered in our primary text at all. In addition, Wiley's web site has an area dedicated to additional companion resources. While it does not appear to be fully populated yet, I look forward to using the book and the site constantly through the remainder of my education and going forward into my career in interior design.

This textbook is the best. It is very readable and can be easily understood. There is not any doubt that the author knows the subject at hand very well and presented it in a manner that is understandable, and makes the textbook enjoyable to read.

I received my book in a very quick time frame. I found it in great condition, and had plenty of time before my class started. I would recommend the supplier and order again in the future for other needs.
