With infinite inspiration available at the click of a mouse, interior design has become undeniably egalitarian as many fledgling decorators create striking settings on their own. Yet with abundant access to resources—from social networking boards and blogs to digital magazines and virtual retailers—the possible pitfalls are boundless: a rug that sprawls hazardously into the traffic lane, a sofa that sits much too low, chairs impossible to get out of, lamps that top at different heights. And how about un-chic window treatments that fail to reach the floor, a chandelier that overwhelms the space, or—beyond worse—a collection of bland, soulless spaces? All this is to say that it is easy to become ensnared in a web of pricey mistakes.

Once, the thought of doing much of the decorating oneself was viewed as difficult and daunting. While countless design aficionados still insist on leaving the task to professionals, the Web has been a game-changer. With the art of design having a pull that is difficult to resist, scores now see the challenge of creating an alluring room as an aesthetic undertaking en route to self-satisfaction.

So, how do you who opt to be hands-on avoid costly blunders while putting your own artistic spin on a space? To be sure, it helps to have a keen eye and a comprehensive plan for a fulfilling foray into a world awash in options awaiting judgments about style, durability and price. Here, then, are some guidelines gleaned from the world of design that aim to help you artfully enhance your surroundings and, ultimately satisfy your soul.

Betty Lou Phillips, ASID

I cannot believe that people claim this is a "must have". Not to be snappish, but does someone really find this binder useful? There are few pages, and the info is so basic one could find it in any magazine. "There must always be a table near a chair." Oh, glad I paid for that advice. "Rugs... personify form and function." Gee, that's helpful. The photos are random, the advice is sophomoric, the section tabs are substantial. This is a glorified notebook, and if it came with a 3-hole punch. you could build a reference book using pages you have torn from shelter mags. Save your money and get a binder at the drugstore.

I feel cheated, and after reading the other reviews, somewhat cynical about the reviewers. Are they friends of the author? Check and see how many reviews they have written and for whom, and you may be suspicious too. I know Ms. Phillips is well-respected, but this particular offering is profoundly disappointing. I want my money back.

I am returning this book, not because I don't love the concept (binder where you can insert your own tearsheets, etc.) and the content, but because the book has a chemical smell. It's one of those books/magazines printed with such odiferous ink that I'd have to view it with binoculars to get it far enough away from me to read it without being overcome by the fumes. Another odiferous book I have and will get rid of was printed in China. Don't know where this one was printed, but printers have to get a clue and stop using this ink!

It had some very good basic decorating information, but I am afraid that I expected more. I had read a review, and based on the review, I expected more information.

It was a good gift for a graduate, but did not serve as a textbook that I was looking for. Nice ideas, though.

I have been a big fan of Betty Lou Phillips design and children's books for some time. The images in her books are beautiful and inspirational. This book really does give one a sense of all things involved in creating spaces that are pleasing to the eye as well as to daily function. I am looking forward to using this book to enhance my living spaces and influence others. Your home is your safe haven and it should reflect who are and what you love. I love that Betty Lou addresses this in the beginning of the book. As your tastes change so should your home. As they say, live with what you love.
