Great design? No. But it gets the job done.
We got a whole house fan last summer and it came with this awful switch:
Westek TMSW12HS Hardwire Indoor In-Wall 12 Hour Mechanical Countdown Timer with Wallplate, Stainless. It was garbage and died shortly after installation. After that I wanted to go electronic and settled on this model since it was rated high enough for our whole house fan (based on the specs I found on the motor itself). I was surprised by how few options there are out there that were rated for the proper load on a basic whole house fan. We've had it in use for almost a year now and have been pleased.
The front panel is a plastic cover on a hinge. When you press it, it depresses the small on/off button behind it for whatever default amount of time you've assigned. If you want less time you can hold down the button and reduce the time like you would on an alarm clock (goes slow at first, then faster). It's really easy to go too far, which means you have to start over (double tap the plastic door to reset the timer) or open the door and use the +/- buttons. If you want it to just stay on without turning off, you can open the plastic door and hit the pause button. To the engineers who designed it: it just didn't need to be that hard.
The plastic door only stays closed because of two plastic tabs that click into place. I'm sure with enough use it won't "latch" anymore and will just hang open. As to the battery problem noted by the other reviewer, I haven't encountered that problem yet but have no reason to doubt it. I'm sure I'll have to wrestle with that issue shortly.
Bottom line is that it has its warts, but it was the best option going.
