I have purched 4 of these over the last decade. They simply wear out after a couple of years. Intermatic must have a monopoly on the stores around my area, because 10 years ago, it was the only mechanical timer I could find. And don't bother trying to contact Intermatic to say your $40 timer doesn't work anymore- they simply blow you off. I thought perhaps the 1st two were simply lemons, but after 4 - don't buy them. The electronic versions don't wear our, come with motion/light sensors, and cost half as much. I have held a romantic notion of having a mechanical wind up - 'cause I could tell it was still working, and could see how much time was left. But the intermatic models just aren't worth the money.

This switch works fine - it's quiet and it's perfect for our bathroom fan that we often would forget to turn off. The only downside is that if you use a ceramic wall plate (or probably any style of wall plate that's thicker than normal), the rotating switch might not stick out far enough. To deal with this you'll need to replace your wallplate with a GFCI-style plate (the type with one large rectangular opening), and you'll need to trim the plastic faceplate included with the switch so that it'll fit. I did this and I'm happy with the results.

This item replaced a flimsy timer (similar design) where the spring got too weak to rotate the timer to the "Off" position.
It is a lot more solid, and one can feel that, by comparison, more strength is required to wind it up, which means the spring is strong to get the timer going backwards.
No complaints, easy install... Just one note - it would be better to have a metal insert in the knob...
