From the Manufacturer

The need for surge protection products has increased dramatically and is expected to grow in the years ahead. Today's businesses rely on computers and computer systems to support transaction activities essential to the success of the business. If the computer is down, most activities stop and the business comes to a grinding halt. Power irregularities such as surges and spikes create performance problems for the systems handling essential transactions and sensitive information. Intermatic offers solutions to satisfy your protection requirements. The IG1240RC3 Type 2 Surge Protection Device provides greater capacity to handle surge energy (based on their close location to the service ground) compared to standard plug-in strips. Designed for 120/240 volt single or (split-phase) panels, the IG1240RC3 features one Green LED indicator for surge protection status on AC and 4 30" 12-gauge leads. I had this surge protector on my pool equipment when my house received a large electrical spike from lightning, it worked as advertised and saved my electrical panel and pool equipment. The surge protector itself was fried!! Make sure you check it after a strike like that and replace it quickly. I keep an extra one in the basement in preparation for the next potential lightning strike.

I bought this Whole House surge protector after a major snow storm brought huge branches down on my power line, breaking the neutral. The resulting surge voltage damaged several appliances, fluorescent bulbs and fixtures, and EVERY surge protector in the house. Several of those surge protectors burst into flames. Luckily, most of them DID protect their devices. Lesson: don't buy cheap surge protectors. I replaced them all with good quality devices.

While having an electrician in to install a generator transfer switch I had him install this Intermatic Surge Protector. Several months later, a huge lightning bolt hit the primary 13 KV power line across the street, splintering the post, and dropping the primary line directly onto my home's secondary feed line. The lightning blew out the pole transformer as well, cutting the neighborhood's power.

Amazingly, once power was restored, there was absolutely NO DAMAGE to ANY of my appliances or electronic devices. The protector's indicator light remained bright green, indicating continued protection. Since then, we have had two more near strikes that would have damaged something in the house. Again, NOTHING was damaged and the indicator remains a confidence-inspiring bright green. I'm glad I got this Surge protector and highly recommend it.

This is a great item. Not sure if I'll ever see it work, but it's good for piece of mind.

Installation was easy. I moved a double pole breaker at the top of the panel to the bottom (just extended the wires with a twist connector). The warnings about not piggybacking off of high draw or sensitive circuits concerned me, so I added a double pole 20 amp breaker. I have plenty of extra room in my panel and a breaker is only about $7, so I figured it was better to have the spd on its own circuit. I also had to buy a male and female PVC adapter along with 10ft of conduit (only needed about 8 inches of it). Because of other wires coming out of the panel knockouts, I had to extend the spd to about a foot out from the panel. Hooked all the wires up, trimmed the extra wire, and restored the power. Works great, green light is on.

Update: After just over a year, the green "working" light went out for no reason. No surge, no tripped breakers. Contacted Intermatic and filled out a warranty claim. They promptly sent me a new one for free.

Also, the wires appear to be aluminum; I was worried about them oxidizing. I contacted Intermatic and they said not to worry: the wires are tinned copper.

Well, this is one of those unique items that one buys but hopes never gets used, like car or flood insurance. I read all the reviews, and went to the Intermatic website to research the differences between this and the other models before making the purchase. This is sort of a middle of the road model, with lesser priced ones offering only 3 way protection while this one is 6 way (protection between line 1 and line 2, line 1 to neutral, line 1 to ground, line 2 to neutral, line 2 to ground, and neutral to ground) and more expensive models providing phone and cable TV protection I don't need. I installed the unit through a 1/2" knockout on the underside of my outdoor panel, and wired the four wires as instructed to a new 20 amp double pole ($7) breaker, the neutral buss, and the ground buss. Note that I am a facility engineer (35 years) so am experienced and VERY respectful of the power inside a panel. There are naked buss bars in there with 240 volts on them--this will kill a person before they hit the ground so if you are even the tiniest bit uncertain of what you're doing, please get a learned professional to do the deed. Do NOT wear rings, watches, or metal jewelry of any kind when messing with live electrical panels, and wrap the shaft of your screwdriver with a couple layers of electrical tape to help stay safe. Not trying to scare anyone but getting shocked or worse can ruin an otherwise very nice day. Anyway, the awesomely bright green LED came on once everything was buttoned up and I flipped the breaker on, so I must assume that I'm ready for the next lightning strike that happens so often with our Phoenix AZ area summer monsoons. We'll see!

I purchased this surge protection device in October, 2011. Although we live in the high desert of Arizona we receive monsoonal storms during the summer that can be pretty impressive because of the lightning. We have had some pretty close strikes but no damage to our electronics.

I recently noticed that the status light had gone out indicating the unit was not in a protective state. I contacted Intermatic and provided the necessary documentation. Within 1 week I received a new unit at no charge. I can highly rate both this product, and certainly Intermatic for it's warranty service.
