5.0 out of 5 stars Big bang for the bucks
I ordered these to replace a group of Malibu solar accent lights - the batteries had frozen and swollen over a couple of winters. New batteries would have cost more than this set of lights.

The assembly required 2 hours. The most difficult part for me was snapping the skirts on the tier lights, but I've had carpal and ulnar tunnel surgery on both wrists...

I got the kit and started putting it together when I realized I had several broken parts. I tried calling the company but never got a live person. There was a web address for missing or broken parts so I went to it, but it was just advertising and lists, no place to request parts. There was a place to email, so I did. I gave them the item number and the parts that were broken, my email address, phone number name etc. I never heard back from them. So, I contacted Amazon and then send a mailing label for me to return it. I haven't gotten my refund yet, but I don't expect any problems with Amazon, though I'm disappointed in Malibu Lighting.

I ordered these to replace a group of Malibu solar accent lights - the batteries had frozen and swollen over a couple of winters. New batteries would have cost more than this set of lights.

The assembly required 2 hours. The most difficult part for me was snapping the skirts on the tier lights, but I've had carpal and ulnar tunnel surgery on both wrists. Installation was another 4 hours - I buried the cable between the lights a couple of inches below grade.

The parts are light-weight, but NOT flimsy. I had no trouble with breakage and the hinges on the floodlights are sturdy. These are made from tough plastic. The instructions are adequate. I tested the fixtures with an Ohm meter during assembly (approx 3.4 - 3.6 Ohms) and found that inserting the bulbs sometimes pushed the connector lead down into the socket causing an open circuit - be sure the bulb connector leads are fully seated in the sockets. All of the lights in the assortment work fine. The line connectors CAN be removed without damage, but the lights should be tested before attaching to the line (with an Ohm meter or a 12V source) to avoid the issue and possible wear/damage (I'm clumsy) Concerning esthetics: I don't believe anyone could tell black plastic lights from black metal lights at 6 feet away. They look just like the solar lights I replaced, and do look quite good in the dark :).

My assortment was missing a package of 5 bulbs and one of the bulbs in the kit was smashed. I called the automated broken/replacement parts number found in the instruction sheet with some trepidation. The replacement parts arrived in less than two weeks, no fuss, no muss!

At less than $2.50 a light (not to mention the transformer/timer) this is a great deal for anyone who enjoys assembling a kit.

5.0 out of 5 stars I HAVE SEEN THE LIGHT!!, March 30, 2007
By
This review is from: Intermatic LX19720T Malibu Outdoor Lighting Kit with Fourteen Tier Lights, Six Floodlights plus 88-Watt Power Pack/Timer, Black (Tools & Home Improvement)
I purchased this set of lights at our local LOWE"S Home Improvement Store. My set includes 14 Tier lights and 4 spot lights and the power pack. I paid $38.97 plus tax. I purchased them to replace solar lights , I was tired of buying replacemant batteries ( which are not cheap) and spiders love to get into the solar lights , thier webs interfere with the
lights ability to work properly. Also in the winter time solar lights are worthless!!They do not get enough sun to power them.
Assembly was a breeze , installation was simple and I like the timer feature. They look really nice and I was amazed at the amount of light they provide. I am very pleased with them and am considering getting another set to put around the patio area. I love the fact that they will come on even if the sun does not shine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Value, September 19, 2006

If you complained regarding this product, get a clue. It is a great value for $50. Yeah, it takes about an hour to assemble everything and it will take you a few hours to set up in your yard but if you invest the time, you WILL get great results.

It is what it is, if you think you are getting professional grade high voltage landscape lighting, you are not. If you want something durable, safe and good looking for a great price you are in the right place. Addtionally, parts for these lights are readily accessible at most major home improvement stores so that is HUGE plus.

Paid about $45 shipped and got it installed in no time. Pretty simple installation. Would have loved a photo timer instead of the one that this unit comes with. So far it has been working without any problems. Could not find anything similar at lowes or home depot. When you look at the quality of workmanship etc.. it surely is worth what you pay.

I bought this back in May of 2006. OK, so I gave this two stars solely because of the price. I don't know where they are coming up with a retail of $112, but at $46 the price is pretty decent. First, expect at least a few of the lights to be non-functioning right off the bat. So, consider it a 15 light set, not a 20. The frustrating part of this set is that you don't know if the light works until you attach it to the cord with a one-time use alligator clip. If the light doesn't work, you CAN'T remove it from the cord. Dumb design. The power supply and timer are fine and work well. The lights are so darn cheap and break so easily, it makes the whole set suffer. It took me at least 4 hours to assemble everything and lay it out. Not sure what else can be said. Roll the dice and see if you get lucky.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent value, assembly was a breeze, all parts accounted for even w/poor packaging., July 19, 2007

Finally working on my back yard and tying it in with the front yard, so I needed lighting. Ordered the 14 lights, 6 flood 88 watt power pack for $ 45 off of Amazon because shipping is free! Finished putting it together a few hours ago just before dark with excellent results. Assembly is quite easy after hooking up a few lights it got to be so easy! However, after turning it on, the 4w bulbs are just a bit weak and am already planning on getting a 300 watt power pack replacing my 88 watt power pack. I guess I'd like it a bit brighter. So, I'm ordering a few 12 watt bulbs to see the difference. Good product (all plastic) however cleverly engineered to last outside despite its apparent flimsiness. I bought this kit based on the comments on this web page and I'm glad that I got this kit. These comments helped me make my decision which I feel makes a good buy!

5.0 out of 5 stars I have been using this type of lighting happily for about twenty years now, June 24, 2007
This review is from: Intermatic LX19720T Malibu Outdoor Lighting Kit with Fourteen Tier Lights, Six Floodlights plus 88-Watt Power Pack/Timer, Black (Tools & Home Improvement)
I have been using this type of lighting happily for about twenty years now. The metal ones I have tried rusted out in less than two years and looked bad (rust) in just months. I still have some of these plastic ones up and running for well over ten years. Yes, there is some minor maintenance each summer, (I put some Oxiguard "anti corrosion" electrical grease on bulb socket!) but what outdoor item is without some maintenance??

These really assemble easily, work well! The only soldering that may be needed might be when connecting additional length to the cable, that and some heat shrink over it makes it last indefinitely!

The lights connect by spiking the electrical cable in the "Seat" And a pliers helps set them good and tight.

By the way I also have some solar powered ones I tried, not what they are cracked up to be. The batteries corrode quickly at the contacts due to moisture, see my suggestion above about oxiguard, helps here also! The replacement batteries get expensive and the light level is well below these powered ones. This order is my fourth set added to my half acre yard.

I decided after 1 1/2 years that solar powered lights are not all they are cracked up to be. Trying several different models they all offer little light, the batteries die....

So I found these lights and decided to give them a try. Good news, they are very bright and once the lights are assembled they are easy to install outdoors. I can't say I care for assembling each light fixture however. That alone took me several hours and while not technically challenging, required fingers smaller than my own.

Still they are working quite well and I think I'll order another kit for the other half of the yard.

Box arrived on time. Assembly was relatively easy and the installation quite easy. I especially like the way the connector is designed - it ensures contact with the cable unlike some past/other models where you have to press the cable onto the light post hoping for a clean contact.

What I did not like - the swivel mechansim on the spot lights is very weak and will break leaving the light to "hang" down rendering it usless unless you prop it up with a back support. This really takes away from what is certainly a good set.
