I own a pool that I recently installed the Pentair IntellifloXF pump about 4 months ago and was using the internal keypad. I live the thing, but I digress. I also have two additional pumps, one for the water feature and one for my spa. Of course I also have a pool heater. Everything of mine was wired to a set of wall switches on the outside wall of my backyard so I had to step outside to turn anything on and off. I wanted something that let me control everything from the inside. I don't live where temperatures drop below freezing so I can't comment on the issues that others have experienced.
I wanted something that gave me wireless control over my lighting, pump speed, water feature pump, spa, and heater. This thing perfectly fit my need without all of the fancy features of the Pentair that costs a lot more. More features are great, but not for the price.
My initial impression was that the layout and item was cheesy in appearance and in feel. The controller is plastic and it just doesn't seem that robust. For the price it seemed inline. Considering how much a full blown system costs, I'm satisfied. I didn't use the accompanying electrical box that came with it, but instead I used a pull 1" elbow which I attached this on top of and the other end I threaded into my electrical box. Looks much cleaner.
As far as the signal range that people complained about, I only have issues if I'm running the SPA or water feature pump, which I would assume creates a lot of noise and interference since it is between the Intermatic and my pool..Read more ›
Installation was not too bad (all DIY for me). With intermediate electrical skills one can install this.
The only issue I have is the way the relays work. There are five circuits but two are shared. If you have 240v circuits, they do not interrupt both poles. worse, because they are shared, you have a 240v breaker running two devices, either both 240v or one 120v. This does not seem like it would thrill an inspector. So for me, I would be running 240v filter pump on circuit 1, and then have to choose which other system to power with the (shared) circuit 2. Pool lights are not possible because they need a dedicated GFCI. Pretty much same problem for other options. Would prefer 5 independent circuits.
But love the remote, and the capabilities are nice. It came with air and water temperature sensors.
It can control up to 5 circuits. I use it right now just for a 220v main circulator pump and 220v pool cleaner pump. I may add salt water chlorinator or lighting to this at a later date.
Unlike my manual switches the cleaner pump always has a short delay (maybe 30 seconds) before it will start after the circulator pump. This will keep it from running while dry, and will save me from buying another pump again.
You can control the pumps from both the head unit and the remote; very convenient. The remote's range is not very far - maybe 25 feet. And it's not clear that the ZWave system can be used to extend this. You can relocate the antenna on the hjead unit to improve this, but I don't have a way to do this. For the longest time I could not get the cleaner pump programming to stick; it turns out I was close enoiugh for the remote to respond and create settings, but far enough from the head unit for the settings to stick. Phone service was great, and when I stood net to the head unit while progrmaming the system everythign worked great.
One of my favorite features is that it retains its settings during power outages which are more frequent than I'd like. One less set of clocks and timers to reprogram!
The freeze protect will run the pumps if it's below a temperature you can set; I often don't close my pool in the winter and this can save the plumbing during a cold snap (as long as the power doesn't go out). And the remote shows you both incoming water temperature and air temperature.
