5.0 out of 5 stars Great Product in a Power Outage
We've had ours for over 7 years and need a new one. A great night light but super when the power goes out in the night! Lots of power outages in our area and this product has never failed. Switches to a brighter light when the power fails so you can see around the house. We have several in different areas.

3.0 out of 5 stars If your power goes out a lot
I've owned these for a few years and I just purchased another here on Amazon.

Basically, these lights are plugged into an outlet and have a little neon pilot light that lights up. When the power goes out, the flashlight comes on. There is a switch on the bottom to control this behavior, so it can work completely manually.

I find this is useful...

I've owned these for a few years and I just purchased another here on Amazon.

Basically, these lights are plugged into an outlet and have a little neon pilot light that lights up. When the power goes out, the flashlight comes on. There is a switch on the bottom to control this behavior, so it can work completely manually.

I find this is useful for lighting area that you need to walk in the dark at night with no power. It's also useful to use as a quick flashlight if you need one in a hurry.

The light lasts perhaps 15-30 minutes at full brightness and it will gradually get dimmer. I can't say how long it takes to go down to something too dim to be useful. However, if you want a flashlight, this is not the best choice.

The neon pilot light always stops working on these after a few years, and they're a little expensive for what you get. But this is the only low-cost emergency lighting choice. They're pretty much no-fuss.

Unobtrusive, simple to use, and works well. I've already had the "opportunity" to need it while in the midst of a construction project. It allowed me to find my way out of my office cave.

I can't believe this item is no longer available to buy. Please see if you can't get it re-added. I bought another brand that does not have the extra plug in it! This item has all ready worked for us when we returned home during a power outage at night. This product is great!

4.0 out of 5 stars Glad I bought these before the storm of '06!, April 7, 2007

I had one of these for YEARS, when it finally died (no fault of its own, it was old). I LOVED it. Was very handy. So, I was quite excited to find them here on Amazon, so I bought 5 of them. 1 for the powder room, the kids bathroom, and various hallway outlets. I'm glad I got them when I did, because a few weeks later, the 'Blast of 2006' knocked out power all over the PNW. These came in SO handy when the power went out in the middle of the night. By placing them in the hallways and bathrooms, it was easy to find my way for that 'late night run'.

Don't expect the battery to last a LONG time on each charge, as they don't, which is why I give them 4 stars instead of 5. They are a short term convenience, but oh such a nice convenience. The fact that they double as a night night when the power is on is an added bonus.

Make sure you get enough for all the bathrooms and hallways! And, when the power goes out, turn them off to save battery life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just the thing, January 2, 2007

I bought three of these several months ago. Located them near the stairs and exits for emergency lighting. They work as advertised, provide emergency light, do not block an outlet, and glow a dim orange when power is on. In my opinion a much better choice than the more expensive official blackout lighting boxes. Margie's comment: the "night light" feature is too dim to function as a real night light, but does conserve power.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best combination power failure - night light I could find, April 3, 2007
This review is from: Intermatic PR3C Three-in-One Emergency Power Failure Light (Tools & Home Improvement)
This product is nearly perfect. Most combination power failure - night lights sold now use a small red LED as a night light. In fact they now call them "guide lights" because they really don't light up anything in the house to help you move around at night. This one has a neon bulb (so it makes a yellow light - not white) which makes a pretty good night light, even if it's not a white light. And when the power goes out, the light comes on, and then you can unplug it and use it as a flashlight.

After a night time power failure and my youngest daughter freaking out because she was upstairs and we were downstairs. I decided to purchase several of these lights for the house. One came and did not work right out of the packaging. The rest of them have stopped working in "flashlight" mode, they only work in "night light" mode, when plugged in. They are supposed to change to flashlights when power goes out, however that function has failed on all 4 after 1 week. And yes, I've tried the switch in all different positions and at night; no joy. Now, I have four new night lights - whoops, make that three, as that one doesn't work at all.

1.0 out of 5 stars Useless because you can't turn off the nightlight, December 8, 2009

This light would be perfect for my needs except for the fact that the nightlight can't be turned off. I couldn't find any other product that included an outlet. Unfortunately the always-on nightlight is a deal-breaker. I may try to take one apart and remove the nightlight bulb, it does not appear to be removable from the front. Without that bulb it would be just what I want. Otherwise I may return them.

This light is bulky and while it still leaves space to plug in other items and has the added outlet, it still leaves a rather large footprint on the wall.

The other thing I don't like is the giant orange traffic light. That's exactly what this looks like plugged in. I moved it to a rarely used bathroom because I find the looks of it so unattractive, especially at night when it looks like a big, honking round orange light on the wall and no way to disable that function. You can't even say the orange light could function as a night light because it isn't bright enough, in my opinion, just bright enough to be annoying, but not really see anything. When you unplug it or the power goes out, the flashlight function kicks in and that works fine, but lasts less than 10 min.

Right after I ordered this and was disappointed, I ordered a different one and found I liked it much better: Maxxima LED Night Light/Emergency Light/Flashlight even though it takes up an entire outlet, it gives an option for NO light, unless the power goes out, which is what I wanted and it stays lit for hours and hours in emergency/flashlight mode, not minutes (like this Intermatic) and the Maxxima leaves a much smaller footprint on the wall and would be easier to carry around like a flashlight, if need be.
