Book Description

The Tobey/Slater series builds essential skills one at a time by breaking the mathematics down into manageable pieces. This practical “building block” organization makes it easy for readers to understand each topic and gain confidence as they move through each section. The authors provide a “How am I Doing?” guide to give readers constant reinforcement and to ensure that they understand each concept before moving on to the next. With Tobey/Slater, readers have a tutor and study companion with them every step of the way.  Basic Concepts; Linear Equations and Inequalities; Equations and Inequalities in Two Variables and Functions; Systems of Linear Equations and Inequalities; Polynomials; Rational Expressions and Equations; Rational Exponents and Radicals; Quadratic Equations and Inequalities; The Conic Sections; Additional Properties of Functions; Logarithmic and Exponential Functions.  For all readers interested in basic college mathematics.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

An easy-to-follow approach to intermediate algebra that features realistic, relevant application problems, non-routine problems drawn from everyday life, and carefully chosen examples and exercises. Includes open-ended problems that invite discussion and exploration. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Back Cover

This clear, accessible treatment of mathematics features a building-block approach toward problem solving, realistic and diverse applications, and chapter organizer to help users focus their study and become effective and confident problem solvers. The Putting Your Skills to Work and new chapter-end feature, Math in the Media, present readers with opportunities to utilize critical thinking skills, analyze and interpret data, and problem solve using applied situations encountered in daily life. The Fourth Edition contains additional modeling and real-data coverage. A conceptual approach to functions is introduced early in the book and revisited in Ch. 5, 6, 7, 8, and 10—readers are exposed to a variety of realistic situations where functions are used to explain and record the changes we observe in the world. A discussion of solving linear equations in Chapter 2 now includes coverage of equations with no solution and equations with infinitely many solutions. The sections on determinants and Cramer's rule have been moved out of Chapter 4 into an appendix. This material can be covered with ease after Section 4.3. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars STUDENTS: BEWARE THE ANNOTATED INSTRUCTOR'S VERSION, January 13, 2007
By
This regular version is the one you want.

The instructor's version can actually be bought for much cheaper (but is not at all appropriate for the student), and it appears that someone in Salem, OR has bought a huge load of the instructor's version and is NOT making it clear that they are NOT the same thing as the student version. Therefore, he/she/they are selling them for $36 and up and making it look like that's a deal when it appears to me you can actually find the instructor's version for $7.99 and up.

Make sure to read the fine print. Look carefully for the words "instructor" and "annotated" and don't by the book unless you are looking for that version...in which case you can get it cheaper elsewhere, anyway. (Do a search her for "intermediate algebra annotated tobey" and you will see the lower price ranges on the instructor version.)

He/she/they are selling them all over the internet and sending them from Salem, OR.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clear, concise and comprehensive, March 17, 2002
I am a mother who didn't do well in Algebra in high school. I am now having to help my 8th grade daughter with her Algebra. Having used Tobey & Slater's Basic College Math and Beginning Algebra (whenever her textbook doesn't make sense to me or to her), I am exceedingly impressed with their exceptional ability to explain clearly yet simply the mathmatical concepts. My experience with these books gave me the confidence to buy their Intermediate Algebra (4th Edition 2002). This updated edition provides clear explanations that make sense to someone who is not a math whiz. It includes not only exercises, but also practice problems, real-life applications, cumulative reviews, and writing exercises to teach students to translate numbers into words. It is a very comprehensive approach to empower the student to not just grasp the concept but also to retain it.
