I took Algebra in college after taking classes like Calculus 3 and Probability and Statistics. It may seem strange, but it was one the smartest things I ever did. Out of high school it seems like there are a lot of rules involved with algebra, but after reviewing those rules with this book, I realized that there were only a few rules that are responsible for all the intricacies of algebra. Having this new grasp on algebra really made classes like Modern Algebra and many computer books seem very intuitive. I no longer struggling figuring out how to simplify, factor or deal with irrationals. I also have a great reference whenever I forget how to deal with inequalities or anything else for that matter. This book is great for someone trying to remaster algebra again of just as a course textbook. Be careful not to buy the extra workbook that comes with this - it isn't really that useful, as the book provides amples of exercises and solutions. If you think you are too "good" to relearn some algebra, I guaruntee that recovering the basics will improve your abilities to do math 10 fold - it worked for me!

Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
This is a custom edition book for Cabrillo 152 math, it's pretty much the same as the 5th edition of intermediate algebra by Blitzer. Cabrillo 152 math class now uses the SECOND custom edition (pretty much the same as 6th edition intermediate algebra by Blitzer), so this book is no longer up to date. I feel bad giving this book 2 stars because it isn't a bad book, it's just obsolete now.

This is the first math Author who actually speaks my language--finally. Robert Blitzer does not spend his time showing you how smart he is--we already know he's brilliant--but his focus is connecting with the reader in a very practical manner. For that, I am grateful. He opens the realm of math for all to embrace.

With two kids in college, and a third entering next year, need to save money on college expenses! Excellent book in great shape at about half the price of the college bookstore. Thanks for fast delivery!

More About the Author

Bob Blitzer is a native of Manhattan and received a Bachelor of Arts degree with dual majors in mathematics and psychology (minor: English literature) from the City College of New York. His unusual combination of academic interests led him toward a Master of Arts in mathematics from the University of Miami and a doctorate in behavioral sciences from Nova University. Bob's love for teaching mathematics was nourished for nearly 30 years at Miami Dade College, where he received numerous teaching awards, including Innovator of the Year from the League for Innovations in the Community College and an endowed chair based on excellence in the classroom. In addition to Thinking Mathematically, Bob has written textbooks covering introductory algebra, college algebra, algebra and trigonometry, and precalculus, all published by Prentice Hall. When not secluded in his Northern California writer's cabin, Bob can be found hiking the beaches and trails of Point Reyes National Seashore, and tending to the chores required by his beloved entourage of horses, chickens, and irritable roosters.
