Book Description

0761931856 978-0761931850 November 2, 2004 1
An Intermediate Guide to SPSS Programming: Using Syntax for Data Management introduces the major tasks of data management and presents solutions using SPSS syntax. This book fills an important gap in the education of many students and researchers, whose coursework has left them unprepared for the data management issues that confront them when they begin to do independent research. It also serves as an introduction to SPSS programming. All the basic features of SPSS syntax are illustrated, as are many intermediate and advanced topics such as using vectors and loops, reading complex data files, and using the SPSS macro language.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“The book makes a distinct and important contribution to the field by focusing on an important set of skills that is often only briefly touched upon (if at all) in courses or texts. SPSS users benefit from having solid familiarity with syntax coding in addition to being able to use the pull-down menus. A careful study of this book will help readers advance these important skills.” (Eric Einspruch )

"Where was this manual when I was trying to learn SPSS for my dissertation after switching from MiniTab? It would have been a valuable tool to save enormous amounts of time. It is succinct and to the point." (Wanda J. Long )

Less than adequate. You can learn a few things from this book, but the design really didn't offer me enough examples and applications of command syntax. Anyone who wants to see how this book should be written needs to take a look at the format offered in "The Little Blue SAS Book". I guess it spoiled me from any future computer user guides. In addition, the Syntax manual (PDF) that comes with SPSS offers a searchable guide that can give you everything this book offers in no time at all.

4.0 out of 5 stars Intermediate SPSS, October 18, 2008

This book is actually just what I was looking for. There are hundreds of introductory or comprehensive texts on SPSS, but this book fills a niche that others don't. I have a basic understanding of data analysis and data analysis software. I needed the next step. My only criticism is that it isn't longer and more complete. However, many of the questions I have relevant to the next level of SPSS facility I can take to the people I work with. I really recommend this book for people who need to go to the next level.
