I sometimes think that some texts add extra "filler" or color solely to justify a higher price. This text is two color (the 8th edition is black & green text). An additional color might add a little something to readability. Otherwise, the text is excellent. I have occasionally used it to explain things I _didn't_ get from lower-level texts. It is very comprehensive, including attention to subjects of current interest (in 2010, as I write this). Given how dry economics can be, Varian does a great job of making it readable.

Good for undergrads,
This review is from: Intermediate Microeconomics: A Modern Approach (Eighth Edition) (Hardcover)
An intermediate level econ book that is an excellent follow-up to Hirshleifer's Price Theory.A very in depth coverage of optimisation and equilibrium with the relevant mathematical coverage (still with limited rigour) that is typically suitable for undergraduates. The explanations are more brief than the Mas-Colell et al book but provides a reasonable level of coverage of a wide variety of topics. For econ graduates, the Varian text is too simplistic, it is mainly aimed at undergrads- for grads the Gravelle and Rees is more appropriate.

Overrated, verbose, lacking in math...,
This review is from: Intermediate Microeconomics: A Modern Approach (Eighth Edition) (Hardcover)
This text is extremely verbose and glosses over crucial mathematical steps when dealing with concepts. I am aghast at how overrated this book is. Varian is a terrible writer and those people who think his writing style is "clear," "concise" or "elegant" need to learn what good writing actually is. Pathetic.

I like this microeconomics book. There are difficult ones out there but this one... if you have a bit of understanding in micro.. will surely help you in your class. Good!

It is satisfying to some extent. Although it has some damage on the cover and has some dirt inside.
The ship speed is quick.

I got this book because it was required for a class and I didn't want to pay $150 (plus tax) for it. I'm not textbook expert by any means, but just trying to use the book to help me with my assignments and homework doesn't really go far. It doesn't help that the texts really run together (probably the main reason why it's hard to study from).
