5.0 out of 5 stars Very useful book.
Very useful book. Focuses on the topic of using shipping containers as utility type buildings.

There are currently many popular notions for using containers as residential homes and apartment buildings (etc), but this book does not delve into these type of structures.

The emphasis here is on low cost do-it-yourself methods of building. Lots of good...

2.0 out of 5 stars very few building details
I plan on building with shipping containers and bought this book with that in mind. There are many
specifications as to gauge of metals, dimensions, load capacities, and whatnot, but almost no building
details. This is not what I would consider a helpful book. If it were $5 and labeled as a spec. reference
guide then it would be more accurate.

Very useful book. Focuses on the topic of using shipping containers as utility type buildings.

There are currently many popular notions for using containers as residential homes and apartment buildings (etc), but this book does not delve into these type of structures.

The emphasis here is on low cost do-it-yourself methods of building. Lots of good info on movement, footings, roofs, and joining containers. Also has a great specifications section.

Book has a fair amount of info for only 116 pages (it uses small print and has lots of diagrams crammed onto each page). Some more attention to interior floor plans would have been nice. Overall I would say it's worth the twenty bucks I paid.

After receiving similar info (on CD) as a gift, just before receiving this book, I was concerned I had duplicated my resources. Not a concern! This book is more complete, more up-to-date, better illustrated and handier. All this for the same $$.

If you want to turn a cargo container into a building of any sort, Get This Book !! All info, no fluff.

I purchased this book for my husband (and self) to begin our investigation into container building. The information on specific construction information along with the diagrams is very helpful and an excellent addition to our container library.

It is not a bad deal for 20 bucks. But you can find a lot more information online. It is only good if you do not know anything at all about container structures.

Do not expect to see nice pictures or home design ideas. It has only very basic info.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very informative, no-nonsense, March 6, 2010

I just got this book this week and I am very happy with it. I got it because I've had a hard time finding information on shipping container buildings beyond designs people have made in a design program. It's been hard to find answers to things like "what exactly are the dimensions of a '40 foot container'." Anyhow, this book has info like that and it's very specific. It is not one of those do it yourself books with lots of pretty pictures and an intro filling half a page every 2 pages that's like "When you think of Electricity, you might think of such and such, but blah blah blah..." F that. This book is small, with small type, and actually has good information in it.

Informative, good background overview of subject. Great book for the first timer or individual with little to no knowledge about shipping container buildings who wants to know whether shipping container building is a viable alternative for their purposes. Recommended!

Hi all.

As with many people, we have seen some really bad times in this economic downturn. We recently sold our home and are now renting while we decide what our next move is going to be. I am convinced that our future (my family specifically, but humanity collectively) is in building a more sustainable future. As such, I am looking for ways to make my next house a totally green experience.

I do, however, struggle to convince my wife that living green does not have to mean living out of a box. Rather, I believe it means that we need to try our best to conserve, in all aspects of our lives. As such I picked up this book as a primer for my education into giving my family a green home. They are not convinced, as you might expect, that we can convert a shipping box into a home. That adding solar and a heat pump, ceramic paint (for R value) on the outside and expanding insulation on the inside will make for a comfortable environment. I am convinced it can be.

That said, I picked up this book to try and understand just what I would be up against. It is a great book from a CAD perspective, giving me all the technical dimensions needed to plug it into my program. It falls short, however on style and vision of what a home could be, providing only very limited illustrations and sub-par pictures of containers that have already been deployed.

I will have to check out more "design" type books for that level of information. Still it is a good primer and something I will keep around as a technical reference guide. Buy it for that reason.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book - A lot of content, December 12, 2008

Great book with a lot of content. First of it's kind, however, I was hoping for a bit more structural information than was provided.

Also, author is not a structural engineer and make's no claim to be one!
