4.0 out of 5 stars Oh My Books! Review: The Intern (Sins07 #1) by Jess C Scott, August 29, 2010
This review is from: The Intern (Book 1, Lust, Sins07 / Seven Deadly Sins Series) (Kindle Edition)
Good girl, bad boy, dancing...and lust.

When I first read about this book I was hooked with the hole idea of sins. The Intern is the first book in the new series called Sins07, and it's about Lust.

It has been a while since I couldn't relate to a character, but Suzie made that possible. She is a 17 years old girl, very much like me. The good girl. Intelligent, student of one of the best schools, always does the right thing. But inside, she likes other stuff...like dancing. So when she goes to another city for a internship with her partner, the boring and always safe Chester, she instantly grabs this as an opportunity to have an adventure.

Who haven't wished for an adventure? For good girls...a little adventure could change their life. She finally has the freedom to do what she likes, and that includes taking dancing lessons with the super hot and famous Jo.Zee.

Of course, a good girl in a unknown big city isn't always safe.

Suzie could be any girl. She may be very intelligent, but when she sees a hot guy, she can't think straight. Nothing is more important than having him on her hands. Hormones also join in, and it's a party. And when you're growing up and trying to figure out who you're, it can be a very confusing ride. Specially if your thoughts aren't so innocent but in real life, you have no experience.

At first I wasn't sure it was the usual good boy versus bad boy, because Josh Zee wasn't the topical bad guy. But of course then I started to see all of his flaws, and I wanted to kick him!. Chester is always the good one, and he was such a sweet guy, I wanted to hug him. I can understand why Suzie didn't saw him in a romantic way...but his feelings were so obvious. I wished the author would have focus more on him and the past between them to understand him better.

The writing style was good. Maybe at the beginning it was a little bit slow but after reading the first couple of chapters it gets more interesting and fast-paced, and in a playful way the author manages to make you feel the music and the dancing. Even when I'm not a fan of that kind of music (hip hop), I really wished to start dancing right away! Music can be so....liberating.

So...Lust. For some people, Lust may be one of the most dangerous sins....but who doesn't like a little danger in life? For other, it may be a synonymous for fun. But, is it going to last? Is it enough? Are you willing to pay the price? (I'm a little intense over here!) Definitely the author make you understand the way Suzie lusts for this boy, but don't worry, she may not be very naive in her head, but she's very shy. There aren't sex scenes or something like that, but Suzie is definitely dreaming with them, so maybe it isn't your book if you don't feel comfortable with teens thinking about sex.

Overall, it's a great book, and I enjoyed it a lot. It has this chick-lit feeling, and the end wasn't at all what I was expecting! (which is always good, because I like plot twists). Definitely going to be attentive for the next book in this series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Seven Deadly Sins Series-The Intern, October 5, 2010

This review is from: The Intern (Book 1, Lust, Sins07 / Seven Deadly Sins Series) (Kindle Edition)
This was a fun book! I think Ms. Scott series is going to take off like a rocket. Ms. Scott's writing flowed well and her descriptive were excellent. The characters had depth and I felt like they were realistic with all the trials and tribulations of todays youth.

I loved the protagonist, Suzy Q. and her foray into the world of hip-hop! Jo.Zee, her dance instructor is not only gorgeous, he's mysterious and a way sexy dancer!

The story takes Suzy Q. away from the safe environment of Chester, her best bud and her hometown to the big city where everything is exciting and well, just...BIG! It's everything that Suzy's dreamt of and now, she's caught the attention of Jo.Zee and she has to make a big decision whether or not to let lust override her sense of what she knows is right.

Another thing I really enjoyed about this book was the pop culture aspect. The description of the dance moves had me trying a few myself (blush), the music, the art... all of it. It's part of what made it such a fascinating read.
I'm looking forward to the next in the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun, unique, loved the dance scenes, September 21, 2010
This review is from: 1: The Intern (SINS07) (Paperback)
Suzie Q has the internship opportunity of a lifetime, heading off to the big city of Roxeth (love that name--it reminds me of "Gotham") with her best friend Chester to spend two weeks working for the Lysistrata museum. Little does she know that most of her free time during these two educational/enriching weeks will be spent with the heart-stoppingly handsome dance instructor Jo.Zee. Is Jo.Zee as perfect as he seems, or will Suzie find that happiness lies in a calmer, more familiar direction?

Suzie's on the brink--her life has been devoid of any big excitements or risks, and she's hoping that during her internship she'll find something or somebody will transform her dull existence and help her really experience life. When she signs up for an introductory hip-hop dance class offered at her hotel, she meets the embodiment of the living-life-to-the-fullest philosophy, Joshua Zee, a 21-year-old dance expert who thinks she's got good enough moves to be one of his backup dancers in the hip-hop fitness DVD he's about to film. Suzie falls head over heels for hip-hop dance, for the big city with all its opportunities, and for Jo.Zee, who is the single most tempting guy she's ever met.

Suzie is very likable, and though she's completely consumed by thoughts of Jo.Zee for most of the novel, that's basically the point of the story, since The Intern is the first book in series based on the seven deadly sins, and Suzie's following the "lust" theme. And though she's not always eying Jo.Zee in a raunchy way, she's definitely deep in lust, because her feelings for him are based on desire more than affection or companionship. Suzie's always thinking about his looks, his moves, his accomplishments, his advice, his potential reactions to her. Normally, this kind of guy-obsession would make me lose respect for a heroine, but Suzie is so adorable, I never stopped liking her. It's like she's had such a narrow band of experience that she doesn't recognize that the feelings she has for Jo.Zee aren't exactly healthy ones. Jo.Zee represents excitement, the complete opposite of Chester, who she's known forever, and who is constantly mistaken for her boyfriend in public, but who's normal, predictable, and almost like a brother to her. Chester's always there in the background of the story, doing small, thoughtful things like caring for her ankle when she sprains it, but whenever Suzie's with him, no matter how hard she tries to pay attention, she finds her mind turning to thoughts of Jo.Zee.

Once I stopped offering mental advice to Suzie and just let the story take me on a journey, I really enjoyed it. I absolutely loved the dance scenes and the description of the movements, and I even caught myself browsing Youtube, looking up the eclectic, cool music artists that were mentioned (never heard of the singer/dancer BoA? How about Korean pop star Rain? You should know both, without delay! ) The delights of the big city and the facts about various artworks from the museum were also fantastic additions to the story which really made for a fun, unique reading experience. Also, the ending twist was incredible--I didn't see it coming at all, but it was set up from the very beginning. Good stuff.

2.0 out of 5 stars Fancy dancing with a major twist!, October 3, 2010
This review is from: 1: The Intern (SINS07) (Paperback)
THE INTERN, by Jess C. Scott, was an interesting start to a series in which each book focuses on the Seven Deadly Sins. The Intern explored the sin of Lust.

Right from the start I had some issues with this book. I felt there was a lot of telling versus showing. Every emotion and situation seemed to be explained to me, I felt I did not even need to think while reading, it definitely took me out of the story.

On the other hand, I liked the "story" as whole. It was a good concept, great plot, and there was a whopper of a twist at the end. Scott's talent was showcased in her visualizations of the dance routines. I enjoyed reading and experiencing the freedom and rhythm that these dancers possessed.

Even though I liked the story, the actual wording of it and the telling versus showing really took me out the story and it was tedious to read at times. I wanted to like it more but it just did not work for me. I would still like to read the next book in the series because I love where Scott is going in this series. I would recommend reading it to see for yourself, but regretfully it was just not for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unique and exciting read, September 7, 2010
This review is from: The Intern (Book 1, Lust, Sins07 / Seven Deadly Sins Series) (Kindle Edition)
I thought this first book in Jess C Scott's 7 Deadly Sins series was great. Her writing style is unique and a breath of fresh air when you read a lot of YA, like I do. The subject matter is original. The main character Suzie and her friend Chester are interning at a museum for two weeks. They get to stay in a nice hotel during their internship and the hotel has a dance studio where a hip hop workout video is being shot. Suzie is interested in dance and gets a chance to be in the video. So, as the reader, we are treated to behind the scenes views of what it is like to work at a museum and the world of hip hop.
The "sin" that The Intern portrays is lust. Suzie has got it bad for her dance instructor Jo.Zee and he is a lust worthy individual indeed. The way that Ms. Scott describes Jo.Zee and the dance sequences are similar- sexy and accomplished. Whether you're a fan of dance or not, you will find yourself invested in the moves because of how they help Suzie develop her relationships and learn more about herself.
I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the sins in the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dirty Dancing for teens, November 11, 2010
This review is from: The Intern (Book 1, Lust, Sins07 / Seven Deadly Sins Series) (Kindle Edition)
I don't usually read romance-type books, but the fact that this book focused on dance really piqued my interest, so I decided to give it a try. It was a very entertaining read as it had a well-developed story that was enjoyable to follow.

Story/Plot - 17-year old Susie and her friend Chester have received an internship at a museum for two weeks, so they are on their own in the city as they work in the museum. After work one day, Susie decides to take a hip hop dance class offered at her hotel, and she soon develops a major crush on the instructor. After getting invited to work on a fitness dance DVD with him, her crush soon develops into a lust for him that she just can't seem to satiate.

Writing Style - The writing definitely starts out a little weakly at first, but it soon blossoms into an enticing style that will draw you fully into the book about halfway through. There are a few kinky moments during the story, but there is nothing that happens that would make it have more than a PG-14 rating. It mostly consists of slinky insinuations rather than actions. However, since the book is intended for teens, definitely note that it is a bit heavy for younger teens and still a bit much for older teens, as well. The writing is definitely intended for a young adult aged audience, but adults that enjoy teenage romance should enjoy the book, as well.
The hip hop dancing plays a heavy part in the story, and being somewhat of a hip hop dancer myself, I recognized the dance descriptions which added an extra interest to the story for me.

Warnings - Mild Language, Mild Sexual Situations

Overall - It really is a nicely done teen contemporary romantic fiction novel. It may be a little too heavy for teens, but on the other hand, some teens may want more.
The writing takes a while to get into, but it will have drawn you in by the end.
I recommend it to people who like teen romances and dance; it's a fun little read that will entertain you.

DISCLAIMER - I was given a free copy of this book for review purposes, but that did not sway my opinion of the book nor did it cause me to give the book a higher rating that I normally would have given.

4.0 out of 5 stars Review by Loraine Lotter. Good read! Def not a waste of time!, October 23, 2010
This review is from: The Intern (Book 1, Lust, Sins07 / Seven Deadly Sins Series) (Kindle Edition)
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! 1: The intern (Book #1/Lust) by Jess C Scott is a young adult romance, telling the story of the two main characters, Suzie Quinn (AKA Suzie Q) and best friend Chester Taylor Adamski, who goes to Roxeth for spring break, working as interns at The Lysistrata Museum. As the story develops, it's clear to see that Jess did a very good job of introducing the rest of the characters, too. They all make the story interesting in their own unique way, but furthermore, and I found this more compelling, is that the characters seemed more in touch with the storyline as a group rather than individuals. Don't get me wrong, all the characters are equally likable, but I have to admit; Chester was especially sweet and I think every girl should have a friend like him!

This is a really good book! It's well written and thought out and kept me captivated from the first page to the very last. I liked the way Jess didn't go into any unnecessary heavy details about everything and still managed to enlighten the reader with the character's pasts and emotions at the same time. It made the book all the more enjoyable.

There are some great descriptions of dance routines, which allows you to create a clear picture of each step in your mind while familiarizing you with it at the same time - making the book particularly educational in a very fun and hip way! She doesn't use any difficult-to-understand dance terminology, which just proves that this book isn't only for people in the dancing industry, but for everyone, whether you're a dancer or not! I do think, though, that girls will enjoy this book more than guys.

Now, I'm trying not to give anything away, but there's an unexpected twist at the end of the book that honestly stirred a bit of mixed emotions in me. I hope, once you've read the book yourself, that you will experience this book the same way I did. It was really worth reading and definitely not a waste of my time.
