5.0 out of 5 stars Looks good. August 4, 2011
Format:Spiral-bound
My copy came in the mail today and I thought I would post a bit more information about it, now that I can see what it includes.

This cookbook is pretty thick. It has 228 pages, and recipes are 1-2 pages each. A lot of the recipes (maybe 1 of every 3 recipes) have color photos that show what it looks like.

Something that is really helpful about this cookbook is that it really goes over the basics; so, for instance, it talks about how to make ghee, yogurt, vanilla, nut flours, and how to make coconut flour and coconut milk.

There is a condiments and sauces section. I am SUPER excited to try these, because my husband is severely allergic to MSG, so he hasn't been able to have mayonnaise, ketchup, BBQ sauce, or ranch dressing in years. (There are other recipes for condiments, too.)

The cookbook is divided into traditional cookbook sections: Appetizers, Soups & Stews, Salads & Dressings, Breakfast, Main Dishes, Side Dishes, Fabulous Ferments, Breads Crackers & Pizza Pies, Desserts & Snacks, Beverages.

Then, there are a few different types of indexes at the back, with some other resources.

If you've been doing GAPS or a similar diet at all, you will probably have most of the ingredients you need for most of the recipes. This book does not call for expensive, fancy ingredients, except a lot of the recipes call for ghee or coconut flour, or coconut oil, and these are things that average households probably don't have, but they're pretty standard ingredients in GAPS households. (Even if you didn't have those things, you would still be able to make a bunch of the recipes anyway.)

Not having cooked anything yet, I am excited to so many new things to try. I just started the GAPS diet a few days ago, so the recipes here do not look as good to me as a cookbook that includes sugar, flour, and milk...but, that's the whole point, so I can't really complain about that.

Even still, there are quite a few recipes that sound delicious to me--there is a breakfast casserole that looks really good, and some chili, and even marshmallows! I think this will make it a lot easier to stay on the GAPS diet for a while.

I'm glad I bought this, because it really is a perfect book for people doing GAPS (all of the recipes are "safe"). After I make some of the recipes I will update my post.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good recipes January 11, 2012
Format:Spiral-bound
I got this when I very first started GAPS. It was so nice to have a cookbook to refer to, since I was lost as to where even to start with the diet. Most of the recipes in here are very good, too. My 2 complaints are:

1. Has too many dessert recipes. I know that sounds weird, but GAPS is a low-sweet diet. So many of the recipes in here use honey and nuts, and lots of it. While that's fine, and it is okay to have some of those things, the dessert section is, I think, the largest. I like desserts and all, but I need more of the savory stuff. I was so craving sweets when we started the diet, I would just flip through that section again and again and imagine eating it. Not totally a flaw of the book, but it is off balance.

2. Some of the recipes are a little complicated. Again, this isn't a big deal, but GAPS is extremely difficult to implement. Maybe they should have an Internal Bliss for beginners, with just easy recipes. As easy as they get. Anyway, after several months on GAPS, things have gotten better and easier. It just feels overwhelming to think you have to make all these gourmet meals all the time. You don't. Just throw some meat and veggies in a pan with lots of real fat, and you're good :)

2.0 out of 5 stars Gaps in Information April 19, 2012
Format:Spiral-bound
I ordered this cookbook to expand my repertory of gluten-free, lactose-free, sugar-free recipes, hoping this would give me more options in my diet. Although there are a number of interesting recipes, missing information in the recipes was the number of servings per recipe (which I consider important information since I live alone and often half or quarter recipes), pan sizes for some recipes, approximate weights of ingredients like squash, cauliflower, bones, etc. that can vary greatly in size. Even though cooking is an art, when one is trying to utilize new ingredients and not sure what to look for, it is helpful if the writer of the cookbook is more exact and follows accepted recipe formats. The book contains two indexs--one for ingredients, which is always helpful when you are trying to use up what you have in the fridge, and a Quick Reference Recipe Finder which for some reason is not alphabetized.
