I would not recommend HP drives.

While at Fry's a young man in the tech department suggested I clear the CMOS then hook it up.

The problem is that the drive doesn't work for long.

I'm very pleased with the performance and quality of this optical drive. I have an HP so it works seamlessly with the unit.

Positive Summation: Works every bit as great as the included optical drive.

Negative Summation: TigerDirect has very poor customer service when I contacted them regarding this product. Sadly, the two gentlemen I spoke with over the phone have helped me in my decision to never purchase from TigerDirect again. Big deal, right? I'm one customer but they can bite the big one :o)

When it works, this drive is great. Creates nice CDRs and DVD-Rs with custom labels. Very useful.

The problem is that the drive doesn't work for long. The one that was originally installed in my HP Media Center PC worked perfectly for a little over a year, then started burning DVDs that would "freeze up" about half-way through when played on other DVD players. Since it had just gone out of warrantee, I had to go out and buy a replacement.

I got the replacement 1070i drive installed with no problem, although I had to load a bunch of Nero software that came with it (which I didn't really want since I already had perfectly good CD/DVD/Lightscribe software) or else the lightscribe feature wouldn't work.

But I did manage to get the drive up and running and it worked beautifully for about a month and a half. Then I started noticing a "flick, flick, flick" noise when it played CDs, which got progressively worse the further into the disc it played.

I called HP's tech support and was told to send them an email describing the problem with a scan of the receipt. I did so, and nearly a month went by with no response. So I called again and was told that they never got my email. In the meantime, the DVD burner has gone bad and I'm back to DVDs that will play for 50 minutes and then "freeze up".

I called again and was told to re-send my email. I'm still waiting for a response.

At this point I'd rather just get my money back and buy a different brand (I'll never buy an HP burner again, nor any other HP product for that matter), but I doubt that will happen.

I bought this DVD burner from Best Buy and I've had it installed for about six months. Most of the time it works just fine, and it's fast enough for my needs. However, recently I've been having problems with it that seem to be software/driver related. Just this morning I put in a CD with data files. Windows Explorer showed me the files, which I copied to my desktop. I needed to make a copy of those files, so I then took out the data disk and put in a blank disk. But when I loaded the blank disk, Windows Explorer still showed the contents of the data disk. No number of reloads or refreshes seemed to fix it. I tried dragging some files to the window (to burn them to the blank disk), and windows added the transparent icons for the files (showing that they were waiting to be burned) - but when I went through the wizard to burn them it said that I needed to insert a blank disk, even though there was already one inserted!

I've had problems like this with this burner for a while now, so I decided to call tech support to try to get an updated driver (because apparently the HP website doesn't offer anything for the 1070i - not even the original drivers!). Now before I go any further, I would like to acknowledge that this MAY be a Windows problem, not a problem with the drive itself. That being said, onto my issues with tech support...

First I tried to start a chat session to ask someone where I could get the driver I wanted, but the website is setup in a way that you have to select which product you need help with before you can chat with anyone, and guess what? CD/DVD Drives aren't even LISTED as a product you can have chat support with.

SATA connection on the unit tends to break, should make it strong, I had to glue and paste to make the miracle of running it. by the way he has behaved quite well and I have not had any problem except for the connector.
