International Adoption: Sensitive Advice ...,
By Amazon Shopper (Louisiana) - See all my reviews
This review is from: International Adoption: Sensitive Advice for Prospective Parents (Paperback)
It should be noted that this book deals with a single mother's attempt to adopt a child in South America. While it may be helpful to all prospective single mothers, those attempting to adopt institutionalized children from Eastern Europe will have concerns not addressed by this book.

I loved reading this book.,

This book is an excellent read for the person or couple thinking about international adoption. We had already decided to adopt internationally and I found a lot of it I already knew. The stories were very heartwarming and I could really relate. If you are "thinking" about adopting internationally, this is a book you will want to read first. It will make your decision easier and you will be very happy you did!

An experience I could relate to and learn from !,

As someone eagerly awaiting the arrival of her first adopted child, I found this a very valuable book, not because it was packed full of practical hints and useful suggestions, but because it described the kinds of problems, issues and feelings that any adoptive parent has. I think the fact that one of the authors was a single mother like myself made it even more relevant for me. If you are feeling bogged down the facts, forms and processes involved in adopting, this is the book to pick up and address some of those pent up emotions. It is also the encouragement you may need, from someone who knows what it's really like, that YOU CAN DO IT despite seemingly long odds !

A nightstand book...,

My Mom gave me this as a gift when I began our International Adoption. At first, I only enjoyed the beginning chapters~ then put it aside. 8 months later...I'm in a different stage of our adoption and now truly relate to what the mother in this book goes thru. With ups and downs. It's a nice book to pick up now and again when I need to relate to another adoptive mother. It's an honest book....an actual mothers journey thru adoption with a great ending. This would be a nice gift for those just beginning the adoption journey.

I loved reading this book, cover to cover.. which I normally don't do. I tend to 'browse' books. This book is engaging, even though I am not a single mom, or adopting from South America. I found it very personable, and honest. It felt like a friend sharing her experience, regardless if it is my exact situation or not.

Sensative Advice? or Insensitive,

This review is from: International Adoption: Sensitive Advice for Prospective Parents (Paperback)
I read this book from cover to cover and found Jean Knoll's commentary helpful along with the notes from adoptive parents however I found it very tough to get past the elitist ideology of Mary-Kate Murphy. I found Ms. Murphy to be a political and social bigot. For example on page 34 Murphy wrote "Of course I knew what racism was. Like every liberal white American it saddened me."
What would you say the inverse would be Ms.Murphy? Are you trying to imply that conservatives are all cross burners? Are you trying to imply conservatives are not angered by bigots? Secondly Ms. Murphy used her own "white guilt" as an excuse to exclude black children and chose to leave one more without a parent. That Ms. Murphy is the height of bigotry and racism! CHILDREN ARE OF THE HUMAN RACE NOT SOME CONTRIVED NOTION OF "RACE" (by Darwin's definition a sub/ inferior species) BASED ON SOMEBODY'S MELANIN CONCENTRATION. A CHILD, OF ANY COLOR ABOVE ALL DESERVES A HOME!

this book is filled with a wealth of information, not so much on the step-by-step process of international adoption, but on the possible emotional roller coaster of feelings that comes with the process. it is so well written it is sometimes hard to believe it is non-fiction. i was kept on the edge of my seat, and had trouble putting the book down. i finished it in two days! a great read for anyone getting ready to embark on the emotional roller coaster that is adoption!

Not another "how to" book...,

there certainly are enough of those. Aptly titled, this book sensitively addresses the emotional doubts about everything from surviving the adoption process to managing the heritage-related needs of a child raised outside his/her native land. I appreciated the heartfelt happy ending stories as well as those with less happy endings. Uplifting but honest.

What I've read so far has been helpful in the beginning stages of our adoption. Just knowing that we aren't the only ones "running into roadblocks" make this journey less stressful.
