Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

American book publishing is a relatively small industry, with revenues only 13 percent larger than the video-rental business, but it is of special interest to librarians. The first half of this encyclopedia has articles on U.S. publishing and some general topics such as International Copyright and The Societal Context of Book Publishing. Special areas such as children's, feminist, reference, and university-press publishing are treated. Education for Publishing, The Paperback, and Libraries and Publishers are among other topics covered. The second half of the volume is arranged by regions of the world and contains articles on publishing in 26 countries, plus such survey articles as Francophone Africa. These articles are not in any standard format but often touch on government relations, literacy, imports and exports, copyright, distribution, and authorship. Some of these entries have statistical tables.

In both parts of the book, the lengthy articles are signed, and many of the authors are well known in the field (John Dessauer, Bernie Rath, John Tebbel, Nat Bodian). Most close with notes and/or a select bibliography. Statistical tables appear in such entries as Book Marketing in the United States and Mergers and Acquisitions. Appendixes include tables of world book production, production by language, children's-book production, and school-textbook production for 1970^-90. A detailed index concludes the book.

It's ironic that so little has been published in book form about book publishing. This fascinating overview of the industry will be of interest to librarians and other book people. Sandy Whiteley --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

Review

"This is a good choice for any library interested in the topic and highly recommended for academic libraries serving journalism, mass communication, and library/information science programs." - Library Journal "The essays form substantial contributions to the literature of publishing. They deal with the past and present states of the industry and its possible future development." - Reference Reviews "This fascinating overview of the industry will be of interest to librarians and other book people." - Reference Books Bulletin
