From Booklist
More than 600 entries are arranged in alphabetical order by each business leader's surname. The essays range in length from two to four pages and contain factual information, such as birth date and education, and an evaluative summary of the subject's career, management style, and impact on his or her company. Entries are signed and cross-referenced to relevant company reports in the International Directory of Company Histories (St. James, 1988-). A list of sources, including books, articles, and Web sites, completes each entry. A name index aids access to the main text. In addition to the name index, the encyclopedia includes company and industry, geographic, and nationality indexes.
The executives who are covered come from a wide range of enterprises. There are entries for the CEOs of very large publicly owned companies, such as H. Lee Scott Jr., of Wal-Mart Stores Inc., and John Browne, of Britain's BP, as well as for famous personalities who head private companies, such as Oprah Winfrey. More than 40 nationalities are represented, with approximately 60 percent of the entries devoted to Americans. There is good coverage of women and minority executives.
Well written and balanced, the Directory provides a very good starting point for research on major business executives worldwide and is recommended for academic, corporate, and large public libraries, particularly if they already hold International Directory of Company Histories. Michelle Hendley
