Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Edited by two experts on dogs, this work has articles contributed by scholars, veterinarians, judges, and writers from the U.S., Canada, Great Britain, and continental Europe. More than 300 breeds recognized by the American or Canadian Kennel Clubs, the Federation Cynologique International, or the Kennel Club of Great Britain are included.

Introductory material covers selecting a dog, health and general care and feeding, breeding, development and training, and competition. This is followed by the breed entries containing information on origin and development, temperament, health, special care and training, adaptability, and standards. A beautiful color photograph accompanies each entry. The more popular breeds, such as afghans, border collies, and dachshunds, receive longer entries than less well known dogs such as the Posavski Gonic. A glossary provides definitions of such terms as stand-off coat or pigeon chest. The bibliography cites 44 works on dogs.

This book has a number of competitors. The Complete Dog Book (Howell, 1992) covers 134 breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club. The Reader's Digest Illustrated Book of Dogs [RBB S 1 94] covers 150 breeds, and The Encyclopedia of the Dog [RBB O 1 95] covers more than 400. The Atlas of Dog Breeds of the World (TFH, 1989) covers 400 breeds from all over the world. Much of the information in The International Encyclopedia of Dogs can be found in the last two works. In addition, The Atlas of Dog Breeds covers breeds that are extinct. This attractive, informative International Encyclopedia would be a welcome addition to collections where such information is needed, but in libraries that already have either The Encyclopedia of the Dog or The Atlas of Dog Breeds and do not have much call for either, it is not an essential purchase.

This review is from: The International Encyclopedia of Dogs (Paperback)
There are many books about dog breeds available, but The International Encyclopedia of Dogs is the most thorough and entertaining. The book features physical descriptions, historic origins, and full-color photographs of every breed currently recognized by the kennel clubs of the United States, Canada, England, and France. Open it up and fall in love with a dog you never knew existed!

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST DOG BOOK!, August 2, 2001

.... Every purebread dog breed is in this thing. There is about 2 pages of written material for each dog! Oh, and let's not forget the pictures! Many dogs have 2 or 3 pictures in this book! It's alphabetical, so it's easy to find the perfect breed in the index or just by paging through. If you love to look at all the breeds of dogs, or are thinking about getting a dog, BUY THIS BOOK!

5.0 out of 5 stars The NICEST Encyclopedia of DOGS!!!, December 7, 2002

This review is from: The International Encyclopedia of Dogs (Paperback)
Every breed that I know is there, and there are a lot of dogs there that I didn't know existed. And the two pictures of the AMERICAN COCKER SPANIELS are great!!! I love the pictures, I think they are one of the best representatives of the breed. Even the very rare ones, even though the info is short, it still gives you an ides of what the dog is like. And the introduction is VERY helpful!!! GREAT FOR NEW DOG OWNERS, DOG LOVERS, DOG FANS, AND EVEN THOSE THAT JUST LIKES TO LOOK AT THE DIFFERENT KINDS OF DOG!!! My friends and I LOVE it!
