Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Rather than serving to showcase the interests of individual contributors, this set offers uniform entries covering issues of sexuality by country. Francoeur, the editor of several sexological references, has clearly done his research: all of the entries closely follow a 14-point outline covering such topics as gender roles, religious and ethnic factors, autoerotic and interpersonal behaviors, contraception and abortion, sexually transmitted diseases, and other pertinent topics. An adequate topical index is included. The main failing of the volume is in the selection of countries to be covered, for which no rationale is given. English-speaking countries are overly represented; the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Ireland, and South Africa are all here. Beyond that, the choice of countries seems arbitrary: why Bahrain but not Saudi Arabia? Why not France or Italy? Why Puerto Rico but not Haiti or Cuba? The spotty coverage is bound to disappoint many. Recommended only for large research libraries.?Mary Ann Hughes, Neill P.L., Pullman, Wash.

Review

"The World Association of Sexology, an international society of leading scholars and eighty professional organizations devoted to the study of human sexual behavior, has endorsed The International Encyclopedia of Sexuality as an important and unique contribution to our understanding and appreciation of the rich variety of human sexual attitudes, values, and behavior in cultures around the world."--Eli Coleman, Ph.D., Secretary General, WAS

"The International Encyclopedia of Sexuality is a landmark effort to cross-reference vast amounts of information about human sexual behaviors, customs, and cultural attitudes existing in the world. Never before has such a comprehensive undertaking been even remotely available to researchers, scholars, educators, and clinicians active in the field of human sexuality."--Sandra Cole, Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, University of Michigan Medical Center

"Although this encyclopedia is meant as a means of understanding human sexuality, it can also be used as a lens with which to view human culture in many of its other manifestations...Considering coverage, organization, and authority, the comparatively low price is also notable. Recommended for reference collections in universities, special collections, and public libraries."--Choice, Outstanding Academic Book

"Most impressive, providing a wealth of good, solid information that may be used by a wide variety of professionals and students seeking information on cross-cultural patterns of sexual behavior."--Contemporary Psychology

"Truly important books on human sexuality can be counted on, perhaps, just one hand. The International Encyclopedia of Sexuality deserves special attention as an impressive accomplishment."--Journal of Marriage and the Family

"An extraordinary, highly valuable synthesis of information not available elsewhere."--Library Journal

"Clinics and training organizations would do well to acquire copies for their libraries....Individual therapists and researchers who like to have their own collection of key publications should certainly consider it."--Sexual and Marital Therapy

"ambitious compendium"--Archives of Sexual Behavior, 2003

“A dry recitation of virtues would never undervalue this incomparable volume’s wealth of useful and fascinating information. Its creators commendably consider space and expense, while preserving the high quality of the multivolume edition. Highly recommended.” – Choice, 9/04

A Must for All Sexologists, Sex Educators and Therapists, July 21, 1998

This review is from: International Encyclopedia of Sexuality: Three Volume Set Volume 1: Argentina to Greece Volume 2: India to South Africa Volume 3: Spain to th (Hardcover)

This handy 3 volume cross-cultural reference of sexuality around the world is truly one of a kind. No sex researcher or educator should be without this impressive set.

Furthermore, any sex therapist who has an international client base (or who works in a culturally-diverse city) will find this reference set essential to their work.

Bravo to Francoeur and Company!
