This book has a very comprehensive aquarium setup, filter and maintenance guide. After this section comes info and colored pictures of different kinds of fish, including it's adaptability, breeding info, temperament and the care it requires. All is indexed at the end of the book....The only down side to this book is that if you're interested in only ONE kind of fish, it won't make you an expert....All in all, this is a great book for what it was designed to do: help you decide what fish you want to buy.

David Alderton's International Encyclopedea of Tropical Fish is an outstanding edition to anyones home library. Not only is it informative on tropical fish alone, it covers everything you would need to know as a beginer and expert in this fascinating hobby. As a collector of chiclids I was excited to learn that they to made a grand appearance in ths wonderful hardcover. Sincerely, John J. Browne

With the exception of the first 21 pages, this 127 page book is devoted to some 200 photos of popular fishes. Photos are excellent as are symbol keys related to aquarium requirements. Also has a 4 page listing of common aquarium plants and their needs and suitability. However, with a total of only 8 pages devoted to aquarium set-up, this book is insufficient for the beginner putting together his first aquarium....Overall, a good book to have if you are purchasing it for the photos and related key symbols.

A good book for beginners looking for something to start with. It has good care and basic breeding information of freshwater and a few brackish fish. Photos are excellent.

Good information but not enough of it.,

All the information provided was very good including information on size, water conditions, the origin of the fish and their temperament (agressive, social etc.) I would have liked a little more on the behavior of the fish and potentially less on spawning but that is really just because I'm not currently interested in breeding fish. Each listing has quite a bit of info along with lots of big full-color photos. (some of the colors on the fish seem like they were added in and some fish were probably not among the living during their photo-shoot. But they definitely let you see exactly what the fish looks like) My only complaint is there were many fish that I wanted to find out about (fairly common ones at that) that were not listed. I like the book and the price is right I just wish there was more of it. The content is good but there aren't enough listings to really consider this a complete reference by any means. Maybe a volume two?

I've bought the $99.95 books for fish but nothing can compare to this book. I recommend it for ANYONE who likes fish books or keeps fish. Great for expert and novice alike. A truly unique book.

I enjoyed the fact that every fish is presented in full color. This makes it easier to identify the fishes. Though the most common are listed, these are good ones to start with, and I found this book to be an informative read!
