Book Description

March 1989 0313256357 978-0313256356
"This is an ambitious, historical What's What (rather than Who's Who) of world film, an admirable, similarly formatted companion to Slide's The American Film Industry. . . . The entries are succinct and sturdily written, many with bibliographies. Information is generally accurate, with a few omissions, and there's a fair share of interesting esoterica. Slide's own published output nearly requires a catalog card drawer (or floppy disk) all to himself, as he and his hard-working associates continue to make the work of film scholars, students, and teachers easier and maybe a bit more fun." Library Journal

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This is an ambitious, historical What's What (rather than Who's Who ) of world film, an admirable, similarly formatted companion to Slide's The American Film Industry: A Historical Dictionary (Greenwood, 1986). Alphabetical listings include countries; production and distribution companies; associations and unions; schools; archives; festivals; awards; theories; magazines; color systems; equipment; and even film characters and genres. The entries are succinct and sturdily written, many with bibliographies. Information is generally accurate, with a few omissions but some interesting esoterica. Once again Slide and his hard-working associates have made the work of film scholars, students, and teachers easier and maybe a bit more fun.

Review

"The International Film Industry is the companion to tne author's matching reference on the American Film Industry. As in the first volume here are an idiosyncratic smattering of entries of Slide's favorite non-United States production companies, studios, distributors, and other assorted organizations. The best part of this book can be found in the short historical overviews of the cinema traditions of other nations. The more than 400 page tome contains a detailed index but no pictures. This is a helpful reference, which should be in every library as a starting place for research."-CAST/Communication Booknotes
