Editorial Reviews

The sixth in a series of live recordings from International Guitar Night's annual North American tours. Brian Gore is a melodic fingerstyle guitarist from San Francisco who founded International Guitar Night in the 1990's as a cultural haven for the world's finest guitarists to share their original ideas in a public setting. Lulo Reinhardt, grand-nephew of Django, is a spontaneous and passionate musician whose unique style, Latin Swing, blends the imagination and feeling of the gypsies into a rhythmic, flowing symbiosis of elegance and spirit. Since the 1990 release of his first U.S. recording Guitars and Other Cathedrals, Adrian Legg has more than lived up to the expectations stirred by an ongoing avalanche of praise from critics, fans, top guitar mags and peers alike. Brazilian Marco Pereira started as a classical guitar student at the Music and Drama Conservatory in his native São Paulo.

After listening to and attending International Guitar Night V, and absolutely adoring every track, I thought I'd purchase VI but after listening to it, I can't even begin to express my disappointment with the musical style (devoid of passion) and utter stupidity/simplicity of the material. These guys are excellent musicians and surely could have made better choices. I purchased the CD because no MP3 version was available but if it had been, and I'd been able to preview the selections, I most assuredly would not have wasted $20 on this schlock.

Let me admit up front that I'm a huge fan of Adrian Legg. It is for that very reason that I purchased this CD. (Legg appears on seven of the fifteen tracks.) I had not heard a single note before purchasing, although several tracks are available on YouTube. Unfortunately there is no CD booklet and little individual track information.

The CD features four guitarists:

Brian Gore - A fingerstyle guitarist from San Francisco, Gore founded the International Guitar Night in 1995. (appears on Tracks 1, 3 (solo), 6, 11, 13, 14, 15)

Lulo Reinhardt - Lulo is the great-nephew of Django Reinhardt and is described as the foremost voice in Gypsy music today. (appears on tracks 1, 5 (solo), 7, 9 (solo), 13, 14, 15)

Marco Pereira - Marco is a native of Brazil and started on classical guitar, but was later influenced by both jazz and Brazilian guitar styles. (appears on tracks 1, 2 (solo), 4, 7, 10 (solo), 11, 14, 15)

Adrian Legg - Quite simply, Adrian is one of the most exciting fingerstyle guitarists of the past three decades. I would recommend any of his solo albums. (appears on tracks 1, 4, 6, 8 (solo), 12 (solo), 14, 18)

Each artist performs at least one solo number, and all four guitarists perform on "Asia" (at 10:39 is by far the longest track), "Kiss Curl" and "Lunchtime at Rosie's." Most of the tracks are acoustic, but Legg's solo version of "More Fun in the Swamp" (which originally appeared on his 2004 album INHERITANCE) is an electric tour de force. All performances are live.

This is more than an hour's worth of mesmerizing guitar music, guaranteed to satisfy any fan of guitar music. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED [Running Time - 65:31]
