Sharing... A simple exchange between two 6-year-olds -- a quarter of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for two pieces of sushi. An invitation to Thanksgiving dinner, a seder, a lunar New Year's feast, or a banquet at the end of Ramadan. For 50 years, the members of the UNIS community have been seated at a common table -- sharing the foods we eat and our delight in the traditions and cuisines of our homelands.
So what better way to commemorate our fiftieth anniversary than to publish a cookbook celebrating the joys of home cooking? The word went out, and more than 800 recipes poured in from all over the world -- from alumni and former teachers and administrators, even one from a member of the first UNIS class! Still more came from the current UNIS parents, students, and staff. The yield? A cookbook filled with the best of traditional and contemporary home cooking from more than 50 United Nations member countries -- proof that our culinary traditions, as mirrors of our respective histories and cultures, can indeed bring us together at a common table.
