Editorial Reviews

Review

"The heritage of food through the diversity of nationalities and, in such, the diversification of cuisines are treasures to be passed along. Thue UNIS cookbook demonstrates in a genuine way, with simplicity, how wonderful it is to encounter a kaleidoscope of food and recipes for everyone to enjoy." -- Gray Kunz, executive chef, Restaurant Lespinasse, St. Regis Hotel, New York City

"What a little gem! You can cook your way around the world without leaving home! This collection of exotic, yet simple recipes also gives a glimpse inside the home of the people who make New York City the most cosmopolitan city on earth. Kudos to the UN International School." -- Molly O'Neill, columnist, The New York Times and author of New York Cookbook

"What better way to travel the world and to understand your neighbor than to embark on a culinary journey? This is what International Home Cooking does. In well-chosen, well-organized, and well-presented recipes, it acquaints you with an incredible array of riches, from Turkish Stuffed Squash and Indian Coriander Chutney to Peruvian Chicken with Peanut Sauce, Russian Sour Cream Coffee Cake and, from the United Kingdom, Poor Knights of Windsor Pudding. Nothing brings people together like food, and food is the perfect vehicle to cross country borders and communicate with people whose language you do not speak. You will travel the world with this book, and it will put a big smile on our face." -- Jacques Pepin, chef, cookbook author, and host of the Public Television series, Jacques Pepin's Kitchen: Cooking with Claudine

"With these varied and easy-to-follow recipes the students and families of the UN International School have added a delicious jewel to the crown of the world's most ethnically diverse dining town." -- Peter Kaminsky, "The Underground Gourmet," New York Magazine

Sharing... A simple exchange between two 6-year-olds -- a quarter of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for two pieces of sushi. An invitation to Thanksgiving dinner, a seder, a lunar New Year's feast, or a banquet at the end of Ramadan. For 50 years, the members of the UNIS community have been seated at a common table -- sharing the foods we eat and our delight in the traditions and cuisines of our homelands.

So what better way to commemorate our fiftieth anniversary than to publish a cookbook celebrating the joys of home cooking? The word went out, and more than 800 recipes poured in from all over the world -- from alumni and former teachers and administrators, even one from a member of the first UNIS class! Still more came from the current UNIS parents, students, and staff. The yield? A cookbook filled with the best of traditional and contemporary home cooking from more than 50 United Nations member countries -- proof that our culinary traditions, as mirrors of our respective histories and cultures, can indeed bring us together at a common table.
