The first sections provide details on the history and rules of 20 different races, leagues, and championship series. Each section offers a year-by-year summary of top finishers, an overview of the season, and overall records for all drivers in each race they started in the league or series under consideration. The author has done a fine job of covering all the major American, European, and international series from Formula 3000 and ProCar up through Formula 1 and NASCAR. Effectively, this includes all major and many more minor established professional racing series and events.
In the section titled "Racing around the World," the author compiles information about every major racing venue. The section is organized by country, and for each venue, information about different configurations, changes to the course over time, and winners of major races are given. Also included are basic statistics of each course, Web addresses, and graphical depictions.
The last section of the volume is an alphabetical listing of drivers. Higham's criteria for inclusion are quite broad and bring in many drivers who did no more than attempt to qualify for a major event. Each driver entry includes date and place of birth and a listing of starts within established major series along with the driver's record overall within that series. The very last page of the volume is a brief but helpful bibliography of works about racing, including titles of important magazines and media guides as well as books and a few Web sites.
This volume is highly recommended for any library serving fans who would like to have detailed information about the sport of motor racing. Public, high-school, and academic libraries will find it to be a fine addition to their collections. RBB

Absolutely priceless,

It seems that Mr. Higham has spent years searching through dusty basements and smelly photo archives to assemble all of this information. If you're interesed in finding out who won what when, this is the book for you. A bit mind-numbing really, as there is so much information gathered here that it is overwhelming. For the serious anorak, there is nothing like this volume! Highly recommended.

This book attempts the impossible task of covering virtually all of the world's major auto racing series' in one volume, as well as discussing racing circuits and race drivers. Considering that fact the author has done an amazing job of distilling all of this information into one, easy to handle volume.
The item description perfectly describes this book, and to anyone whose interest is piqued by the description, adding this book to your library would be well worth it. I bought this book in 2005, and I still look at it fairly often in 2011. My hope is that someday we will see an updated edition.

This is an indipensible reference work for the motor racing enthusiast. Unfortunately, the web is making books of this type rare. Vital stats for every major series, driver, and circuit are included. The presentation and commentaries are readable and enlightening. Hopefully another volume is forthcoming from Mr. Higham but if not, this book provides a comprehensive overview of automobile racing in the 20th century within the covers of a single volume. Highly recommended.
