Book Description

Adib-Moghaddam examines the causes and consequences of conflict in one of the most important regions of the world. Bridging the gap between critical theories of international relations and the empirical study of the Gulf area, this book expands on the many ideologies, cultural inventions and ideational constructs that have affected relations in the past three decades.

Key issues explored include:

  • the rise and fall of Arab and Persian nationalism
  • the international repercussions of the Islamic revolution in Iran
  • the events surrounding the three Gulf Wars
  • the 'mindset' of terrorist networks such as al-Qaeda
  • why US neo-conservatism is threatening regional order.

Provocatively written, persuasively researched and conclusively argued, The International Politics of the Persian Gulf presents the first comprehensive analysis of international relations in the Gulf from an explicitly multidisciplinary perspective.

4.0 out of 5 stars background on Iraq and other countries around the Gulf, November 8, 2006
This review is from: The International Politics of the Persian Gulf: A Cultural Genealogy (Routledge Studies in Middle Eastern Politics) (Hardcover)
With all the continued unrest in Iraq, this book is quite timely. The author studies the countries bordering the Persian Gulf. Providing a synopsis of recent history. Dominated by Iraq and Iran. There is much discussion of the Iraq-Iran war and its aftermath. Including events like the gassing of Kurds in Iraq by Saddam Hussein, in the Anfal campaign. As I write this, the second Saddam trial is starting out, for atrocities committed by him against the Kurds. The book offers the reader some perspective on those events. As well as the Persian Gulf war, that brought in the Americans to liberate Kuwait.

The book goes slightly into the events leading up to the American invasion of Iraq in 2003, and the immediate aftermath. But the emphasis is more on describing various philosophical worldviews, especially that of the US. As put forth in various declarations, including one by the Pentagon, that posited the US as promoting freedom throughout the world. The book is not about the details of the invasion and subsequent occupation, and should not be read as such.

First Sentence:
Far from rejecting or disqualifying a particular theoretical school of thought or methodology in advance, this study tries to radically reinterpret and complement the available literature, with a particular emphasis on those apparently tangential aspects which because of the dominance of 'materialist' or 'realist' theories of world politics remain marginalised.5 Read the first page
