Book Description

August 1, 2002 0321088751 978-0321088758 5
This best-seller continues to provide unparalleled coverage of international political economy, theory, and technology, offering a new 4-color design, a "Changing World Order" feature, and a built-in reader on the September 11 attacks and America's response to them. Joshua Goldstein's field-defining text makes the rich complexity of international politics accessible and exciting for students with clear writing, an abundance of up-to-date, relevant examples, and a highly praised art program. A new four-color design in the Fifth Edition brings the art program stunningly to life, and a larger trim size makes the text even more open and inviting for students. The Fifth Edition has been fully updated to reflect the profound impact that the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and their aftermath have had on international relations.

Editorial Reviews

"International Relations has long been the best introduction to the field. It perfectly balances different theoretical approaches to international politics, theoretical and empirical material, and major topics like international security, international political economy, and global social issues. In particular, its coverage of war, civil conflict, and terrorism is outstanding and especially relevant today."--Andrew Kydd, University of Wisconsin--Madison "Students have realized that women--as factory workers, as peace activists, as political thinkers--need to be discussed in IR courses. Goldstein and Pevehouse's up-to-the-minute, engaging introductory text responds to this need."--Cynthia Enloe, Clark University "Goldstein and Pevehouse have uniquely written a text that is a perfect fit not just for introductory international relations courses but also for multidisciplinary international studies courses. Better than anyone, they sensibly combine political science, economics, history, and more with plenty of illustrative regional examples to help my students build a comprehensive picture of the world."--David Bearce, University of Colorado--Boulder

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Introductory Text February 25, 2002
This is probably the best International Relations (IR) text out there, and it is a good one too! IR is a hybrid and consequently very large field comprised of myriad sub-fields intersecting at various angles. This book makes sense of this confusion, and does so in an intellectually rigorous fashion.
The book is divided into two parts: International Security and International Political Economy. The chapters in these parts introduce the reader to such concepts as power politics, international law, trade, the environment, and the North-South Gap, to name a few.
It is a difficult task to sum up the entire field of IR, and Goldstein does not do this. I'm not sure it can be done. But what Goldstein does do is provide the introductory student with a solid grasp of the fundamentals of IR so that s/he can have a solid foundation from which to launch further inquiries.
Highly recommended.

1.0 out of 5 stars bait and switch September 5, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Be careful when ordering. The used books or even the lesser-expensive alternative new books are different editions and really, different books. For instance, if you're not paying attention, instead of buying the 10th edition of "International Relations" you may find that you have bought "International Relations Brief, Update Edition (2nd Edition)" ... Amazon should clearly mark alternative editions.

An outstanding text in introductory international relations. Gives very good coverage not only to security and power issues but also excellent coverage of international political economy and environmental issues as well. Also gives a short treatment of feminist interpretations of IR.

Got the job done and arrived on time. The authors are clever, and kept me interested. I was supposed to have a more recent edition, but passed my course just fine with this one. (So, I guess there aren't many discrepancies between editions).

4.0 out of 5 stars I'm Happy September 24, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I needed a 10th edition book and decided to take my chances with the 9th. Why spend $150 when this lovely book was $4 and only a few years different? So happy I made that decision and look forward to using Amazon and this vendor for future purchases.

International relations is fascinating but this text is so dry it's hard to really get in to it. Seems more about skimming the surface so you can try to memorize tons of facts,... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Used
Very fast delivery. It did not have any tears or rips. However there was a LOT of highlighted sections and scribbled in notes throughout the book.
