Book Description

The first text in the field to be written following the end of the Cold War, Goldstein's International Relations evenly balances security and economic issues.  It also distinguishes itself from the competition through its strong coverage of alternative theoretical perspectives, the environment, and women.  The book integrates technology seamlessly with marginal icons linking to additional online content such as video clips, interactive simulations, and practice tests. The Updated Seventh Edition offers a brand new feature — “Careers in IR”–that will help students apply their study of international relations to their own career plans, as well as key updates on ever-changing topics such as the war in Iraq, Iran’s nuclear weapons program, Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza strip, Palestinian and Israeli elections, Islamic radicalism in Europe, possible bird flu pandemics and rising AIDS infections, China on the rise, the election of the first woman president in Africa, and more.  Lauded for its commitment to currency, lively writing style, colorful photo program, and abundance of examples, International Relations has long been a favorite of both students and instructors because it makes the rich complexity of international politics accessible and exciting.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"International Relations has long been the best introduction to the field. It perfectly balances different theoretical approaches to international politics, theoretical and empirical material, and major topics like international security, international political economy, and global social issues. In particular, its coverage of war, civil conflict, and terrorism is outstanding and especially relevant today."--Andrew Kydd, University of Wisconsin--Madison "Students have realized that women--as factory workers, as peace activists, as political thinkers--need to be discussed in IR courses. Goldstein and Pevehouse's up-to-the-minute, engaging introductory text responds to this need."--Cynthia Enloe, Clark University "Goldstein and Pevehouse have uniquely written a text that is a perfect fit not just for introductory international relations courses but also for multidisciplinary international studies courses. Better than anyone, they sensibly combine political science, economics, history, and more with plenty of illustrative regional examples to help my students build a comprehensive picture of the world."--David Bearce, University of Colorado--Boulder

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Introductory Text, February 25, 2002

This is probably the best International Relations (IR) text out there, and it is a good one too! IR is a hybrid and consequently very large field comprised of myriad sub-fields intersecting at various angles. This book makes sense of this confusion, and does so in an intellectually rigorous fashion.

The book is divided into two parts: International Security and International Political Economy. The chapters in these parts introduce the reader to such concepts as power politics, international law, trade, the environment, and the North-South Gap, to name a few.

It is a difficult task to sum up the entire field of IR, and Goldstein does not do this. I'm not sure it can be done. But what Goldstein does do is provide the introductory student with a solid grasp of the fundamentals of IR so that s/he can have a solid foundation from which to launch further inquiries.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent introductory text in international relations, May 12, 1999
By A Customer
An outstanding text in introductory international relations. Gives very good coverage not only to security and power issues but also excellent coverage of international political economy and environmental issues as well. Also gives a short treatment of feminist interpretations of IR.

The book International Relations works to present readers with a broad base of knowledge in a world that is infinitely complex and becoming more global with the passing of each day. If you desire to learn about the current governing bodies in the world today, this book will provide the basis for a life-long study.
