Good enough, but maybe not soon enough, August 31, 2000
This review is from: International Club Union Session 6 (Progressive Trance) (Audio CD)
Mark Lewis is a first-rate southern California-based dj who in this new International Club Union mix offers an appealing blend of progressive house and dark trance tracks. In his tune selection and track sequencing he has been careful to maintain a consistent flow and mood, one that emphasizes multilayered rhythms and a dark, complex sound texture. The mixing is excellent, and overall Lewis succeeds in taking the listener on an exquisitely deep and hypnotic sixty-three minute musical voyage.
Had this cd been issued six months or a year earlier, it likely would have stood out as a truly pioneering mix. However, many fans of progressive electronic dance music will recognize at least half of the tracks offered here. This, along with the relative brevity of the set (couldn't he have added just one more track?) diminishes the impact of Lewis' effort just a bit. "Talkin'," "Move," "Run," "Future," and "I'm Not Existing" are all fine tracks, but they've shown up on a number of previous mixes already.
Fans of "happy" trance beware! Those who favor the uplifting, build-and-breaks styles of Ferry Corsten and DJ Tiesto may not find this cd to their liking. On the other hand, I recommend this mix to people who seek a well-mixed sampling of progressive house/trance that reflects the darker edge that has crept into these genres over the past eighteen months or so. Consider, however, that the list of mix cd's encompassing material in a similar vein has grown rapidly. Sandra Collins' "Tranceport 3," Chris Fortier's "Trance America," Sasha and John Digweed's "Communicate," John Digweed's "Global Underground Hong Kong," Noel Sanger's "Trance II," Dave Seaman's "Renaissance Awakening" and "Global Underground Cape Town," and D:Fuse's "Psychotrance 2001" come to mind as previous releases that reflect a similar musical style and which when first released included a lot more tracks that were fresh and original. For someone who currently owns few or none of the above cd's, however, Lewis' effort might be well worth checking out.

ICU has been known to produce some great trance albums, but this one was not their usual. After reading the cover of the CD and being fool to think it is progressive trance, i bought it. DON'T BE FOOLED. This cd exhibits nothing of a progressive trance album, instead it is dark and almost technoish... So if you're looking for Progressive Trance, this isn't the album for you.
