Book Description

September 1998 Internet Directory for Dummies
This volume revisits the Web sites that featured in the first edition, whilst adding new and updated sites. The directory is organized to help both the casual Internet user seeking entertainment and the serious researcher who needs specific information. Sites are broken down into sections featuring news, entertainment, learning resources, sports and leisure, services, interactive fun, online help and a special "off the beaten path" group. The accompanying CD-ROM contains an HTML file that provides instant links to all the sites featured in the book, as well as over 30 tools, utilities and games, including Web Whacker, Internet Coach and VivoActive Player.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

One of the deep dark secrets of the World Wide Web is that sometimes it really is quicker and easier to find what you're looking for in a book--even if what you're looking for is a great Web site. Brad Hill's book is the right choice for those who want to quickly find terrific Web pages devoted to just about any popular topic imaginable--and a few really offbeat ones.

Whatever your topic of choice--news, entertainment, sports and leisure, services, interactive fun, Internet and computer help, and "off the beaten path"--Hill's listings make each category easy to find. Each section opens with an introductory chuckle from one of Rich Tennant's zany The Fifth Wave cartoons before being broken down alphabetically into easy-to-find subtopics. It only takes a moment to find a site devoted to your favorite author, math help, the contents of small-town newspapers, games, or pure recreational wackiness.

Each site listed is one of the best in its category--or at least one of the most influential. Hill's reviews of each site are straightforward, giving you the information to decide whether or not to visit. His many tips, insights, and explanations of background information feature the humorous twists that have been a hallmark of the Dummies series. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

More About the Author

I'm a nonfiction writer. In a typical year I write about a half-million words for publication in various media and genres. My book authorship is mostly of the how-to variety; I've penned (word-processed, actually) several "...For Dummies" titles, one "Complete Idiots Guide to..." book, and a number of non-series titles. Over the years I've written hundreds of columns and articles for magazines and Web publications. Currently I'm a lead blogger at Weblogs, Inc, where I manage a small writing staff and oversee several blogs. I have posted well over 3,000 blog entries at Weblogs, Inc. (Even I find that hard to fathom). At the time of this writing, my most recently completed book is "Blogging For Dummies," which will be out in January, 2006.

A typical day consists of ... well, writing. I sit down, check e-mail and IM messages, and start out blogging for a couple of hours to sharpen my brain for the day. If a book is in progress, chances are good that a ferocious deadline is nipping at my heels; most of my books are written in short, concentrated bursts (weeks, not months). When two or more projects collide I am reminded of the motto at an espresso bar near my home: "Sleep is for the weak."
