Book Description

March 2, 2011
Written in easy-to-understand language for owners of business websites, this guide shows you how to quickly and easily protect yourself using practical simple steps. Whether you have a brick-and-mortar business with a website too, or only do business on the Internet, this book reveals exactly what you need to do to reduce your chances of getting sued by someone or investigated by the government. This guide is intended for entrepreneurs, not law students. The book is based on what happens in the real world to Internet business owners instead of academic theory taught in a law school classroom. Top 10 Reasons You Will Want To Read This Book. You will learn... 1. The single most important thing you can do to protect yourself online. 2. How to avoid getting sued or arrested because of your website. 3. The one mistake even experienced Internet business owners make. 4. How to protect yourself against your own web designer. 5. The correct way to protect your copyrights and trademarks. 6. How to tell if your customer testimonials and endorsements break the law. 7. The single most important thing you can do to run your business with peace of mind. 8. How to quickly spot and prevent online business legal problems. 9. Secrets to "ethically rigging" your Internet advertising. 10. The number one rule that absolutely must be observed if you want to keep what you earn. ...and much more.

About the Author

Internet Lawyer Mike Young started programming computers nearly 30 years ago with an Atari 400. By high school, he was writing text-based adventure games on an Apple IIe and coding in COBOL on a Wang system. Instead of getting an MBA after undergrad, Mike went to Southern Methodist University (SMU) for his first law degree. While a law student, he dabbled in online bulletin board systems (BBSs), the precursor for today’s social networking. After getting his Juris Doctor, Mike earned an advanced international law degree (LL.M.) from Georgetown University Law Center. Shortly after he began practicing traditional business law, Mike represented his first Internet business law client in the mid-90s. Today, his practice focuses on helping entrepreneurs protect and grow their businesses primarily online. President of the Internet Attorneys Association and Chairman of the Internet Ethics Council, Mike considers himself to be an “Ethopportunist,” that is, one who looks for ethical opportunities to build successful enterprises. An entrepreneur at heart, Mike has owned or co-owned 14 different privately held companies. This means legal advice provided by him is based both on the law and real world experience as a business owner.

Fabulous resource! March 9, 2011
Format:Paperback
Thank you, Mike Young, for writing a book about Internet law that people without a law degree can understand!

Internet Laws is a fabulous resource written in accessible language and full of pertinent examples for those of us doing business on the Internet. While Mr. Young naturally makes the disclaimer that his book cannot replace legal advice, he's provided a wealth of solid, helpful information here. If you want to feel confident about your online business endeavors, you need this book.

Internet Laws has earned a place of honor (and will stay within easy reach) on my resource shelf, between the style guides and the motivational books!

I've known Mike Young for more than 10 years. He's been my business attorney and is a client (I designed and laid out this book's interior for him).

Unlike many lawyers who write books for a general business audience, Mike Young should be praised for keeping the writing simple and easy to follow. He avoids unnecessary legalese and peppers the text with practical examples to illustrate his concepts.

The book covers a wide range of topics likely to be encountered by small business owners and entreprenuers operating on the Internet. While not getting into extreme depth on any one topic, Young offers practical advice for staying out of trouble online.

This book certainly won't teach you how to defend yourself in court, but you might learn how to avoid ending up there in the first place. And that's real value here for most readers--learning how to stay out of trouble by raising your awareness of potential liabilities.

The author obviously believes that it's better to be informed about potential consequences than remain ignorant and vulnerable, especially when your business, your finances, your privacy and even your personal freedom may be at stake. As you read through the book, you'll notice that Attorney Young maintains a conservative approach to online activity and usually errs on the side of caution.

Because Young writes as an attorney and speaks from his position as advocate for the reader, his tone can sometimes seem a bit paranoid and alarmist. This not necessarily a criticism of Young. He cites numerous examples of the potential consequences of risky online practices, especially where federal and state laws are concerned.

As for his advice about social media, I understand his concerns about privacy and protection of your content, but I don't always agree with him. In my opinion, the world is changing and some businesses and individuals will benefit from the increased sharing made possible through FaceBook and Twitter. But that's my personal preference.

The Internet remains a brave new world, even more so legally. If you're going to participate online and, especially if you have a business, you need to stay informed.

This book is an excellent first step in protecting yourself.

Mike, Thanks for this book! This is a must have for everyone doing business online. It was so well written and easy to understand. I already use all of your tools to make sure I have the right legal information on my websites, now I understand more of why I need them and what I need.
The Internet is no longer the wild west .. we can't just put up any website anymore.. we have to know what disclaimers, policies and protection we need on those websites. Anyway, every partner I work with and the consulting student I work with - I require them to get this book! If you are doing business online - grab this book - now! Don't wait until you're in 'trouble' -> learn what you need to do now!
