With the increasing globalization of business, the Internet will become of paramount importance as a resource for business, students, researchers, and reference librarians. This guide breaks new ground in seeking to bring some control to the ebb and flow of business Web sites. It covers more than 175 countries and regions and includes more than 2,500 sites. Some countries are not included, since Net access has not yet permeated certain areas of the world.

The criteria for inclusion is explicit: only those sites sponsored by business, government, or higher education were considered. The editor felt that these organizations have the necessary resources--human and technical--to sustain a commitment to long-term Internet access. Web sites created by individuals are not included. Sites were located using standard search engines, such as Alta Vista, Lycos, and Yahoo. Almost all of the sites listed have free access. However, some are free only to certain organizations, such as federal government depository libraries.

The guide is organized into seven chapters, each of which focuses on a region of the world. Within regions the countries are listed alphabetically. Each country description contains five categories: general information, economy, business and trade, business travel, and contact information. Each individual entry contains the Web page title, the URL, and a brief annotation. There are three indexes: a Web site title index, a country index, and a subject index.

Of course, the value of any printed reference source on the Internet depends on permanence of the Web sites listed. The compiler admits that this is a problem but claims that approximately 92 per cent of the sites were still valid when he checked them a year after the project began. One must still ask whether a more valuable format for this guide would be a serial with at least quarterly updates. Or perhaps a more effective way of keeping the resource up to date would be to publish it as a Web resource itself. Despite the inevitable currentness problem, however, the comprehensiveness of this source makes it a useful complement to titles such as International Business Information: How to Find It, How to Use It [RBB My 1 98], which is much more selective in the Web sites it includes. Recommended for business collections where there is a high level of Web-oriented international business questions.
