3.0 out of 5 stars Wide Range of Topics Covered but Overpriced
Your better off buying books specific to the technology your trying to learn. You'll get more details. This book offers a wide range of topics but doesn't go into necessary details for each one. Hard read also and expensive. This was a required book for a college course.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good introductory book on Web programming by the Deitels, October 18, 2007
This review is from: Internet & World Wide Web: How to Program (4th Edition) (Paperback)
This book is much better with more detail and in a more interesting format than the Deitels' other books on computer technology. It has been so in the previous three editions, and this edition continues the tradition while updating the contents to reflect the new technologies on both the client and the server that are available for rich Internet applications. It has a very good introduction to Javascript for the novice programmer as well as a good explanation of Ajax. In fact, it's one of the clearer explanations of that technology that I've seen. I really liked the section on Adobe Flash CS3 and how the authors illustrated the usage of the application by building a simple interactive game. The appendix is very useful with information on XHTML tags,
Javascript, and various coding systems. Very much recommended for someone starting out programming who wants to know what programming on the Internet is like in the year 2007 without already being an expert desktop programmer in C++ or Java. If you're not familiar with the Deitels' approach to technical books, they favor an example-based approach with lots of recipes in numbered steps and "live-code" examples that are usually color-coded so that certain portions of the code are highlighted as the text discusses each portion. For this subject the approach works well and keeps things moving. The product description does not show a table of contents, so I do that next:

Part 1: Introduction 1
1 Introduction to Computers and the Internet 2
2 Web Browser Basics: Internet Explorer and Firefox 28

This book goes indepth into every possible web development code/means/software it's simply amazing. I have good experience in C++ but none in web development, this book is akin to savitch's book on C++, it's very well done and very in depth I would highly recommend it to anyone who is eager to learn to do web design.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun!, September 5, 2010
This review is from: Internet & World Wide Web: How to Program (4th Edition) (Paperback)
This was a required book for a class on web-centric programming. I am really enjoying the programs! It starts at a very basic level of programming, and builds on each concept as you move through the book. Not only does the author introduce the controls and expressions, but they explain (sometimes in detail) why you would want to use one over another if similar options exist. I've taken quite a few courses on C++ programming, so coding in JavaScript was an easy transition.

3.0 out of 5 stars Used for Univ. Course, August 25, 2010

This book covers alot of topics and for someone who has previous background in programming, will it very informative with lots of examples. For me as a beginner in this field i found that examples sometimes assumed things i didnt know.Hence i found it a bit difficult to comprehend some concepts and put in to practise. My take is that for a beginner its best to have atleast a basic grasp of the technologies discussed in the book before dwelving in to this book. I am sure then it would be a very good read.

This book falls into the category of text books written where the writers don't know how to write one. This book is our text at the College of San Mateo in California and it fails to state what needs to be learned in a concise manner. As an example chapter 9 is titled JavaScript: Functions, I would expect that there would be a list of the functions introduced along with the proper syntax, but there is none. Chapter 5 is Cascading Style Sheets but does not have a section or clear reference on how to call an external sheet... not even in the index. Skip this book and consider "JavaScript the definitive guide" by O'reilly and "HTML,XHTML & CSS Visual Quickstart Guide" by Elizabeth Castro. You will be much better served by those two books.

It seems that computer texts are often quite confusing and poorly written. This one is for the most part much clearer, and does not usually assume the reader has knowledge of additional subjects without mentioning this fact.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book about web programming, July 4, 2010

This review is from: Internet & World Wide Web: How to Program (4th Edition) (Paperback)
This is the second book I bought which is written by Deitel family (The last one is "Java how to program 7ed). Again it impress me because its good arranged contents as well as clear writings and rich examples. The print effect is also wonderful. I should say it is easier to read than other web programming ones.
