5.0 out of 5 stars Interpersonal Communication
This book is a real mind opener. It's worth the time not only to take the class, but just to read through the book. Good ideas on how to deal with relationships including; friends, spouse, co-workers, and managers.

I am giving this a "1" rating because I teach an Interpersonal Communications course and this is his FOURTH edition of the same materials in 4 years. This means not only do students have less used books to choose from, I have to reconfigure my teaching. Very frustrating.

5.0 out of 5 stars I read this book to teach a class, but now I read it for pleasure, August 16, 2010

I used this book several years ago, when I filled in for a professor on leave. He used this book in his interpersonal communications class and I just followed suit.

I love it. Devito writes in a conversational tone that makes the most difficult concepts readily understandable. His examples were relevant, and I was able to create real-world exercises to explore the information he presented. Devito's explanation of acculturation and culture shock provided a great context when I screened John Sayles' movie "Brother from Another Planet."

My teaching position only lasted a year. I kept the book and I read it from time to time. Now that I'm a freelancer, I use it to come up with ideas for magazine articles. I wish the latest edition wasn't so expensive; otherwise, I'd buy a newer copy.

This book is very easy to read and understand! I wish there were short answer questions to test our vocabulary word retention.

I recently purchased this book for a class and was very impressed after only reading chapter 1. It is a very complete book and has a lot of extra information if you want to further study a topic. It has examples that are modern and from everyday life and helps students (like me) to better understand the importance of communication. I also liked the format and the inside is very colorful which does not make reading dull. I highly recommend this product.

The book was the best price and quality found available for purchase after much research. Amazon is very user friendly and easy to find products of interest. I am very pleased with the sellers prompt and friendly P & H.

2.0 out of 5 stars Masculine vs Feminine, October 16, 2011
Yes, this is one of THOSE reviews. I will be honest, I do not know if these are standard Communication terms for the situations they are describing. I majored in Humanistic Studies, not Communication, and in my HS courses we would refer to this as "sexist language".

For those who have not read this text book, I am referring to pages 38 and 39, which discuss "Masculine and Feminine Cultures". DeVito and company use the term "masculine" to describe aggressive societies, while they use "feminine" describe passive societies. I see a couple problems with this. The book briefly introduces the theory of "linguistic relatively", the idea that our mother tongue influences our thoughts (defined in the glossary), and discusses sexist language at length. If "masculine" and "feminine" are the standard terms for aggressive and passive cultures, what sort of ideas does this impress upon us? Again, I do not know if this is standard terminology for Communication studies, or if this is unique to the book; all I know is that either case presents a problem.

Functional problems with this book are as follows: the index does not cover most glossary terms, the glossary does not provide page numbers, and the Test Yourself portion of the text is too obvious to actually learn anything. "Correct" answers are frequently either all-true or all-false, or the questions are phrased in absolute positive / negative terms that are impossible to misinterpret.

The book was in great condition. I haven't read through it as of yet but will as the course runs through. As for the content thus far, I am not happy as I feel that the material just seems to drone on about the same topic page after page. This, however, has no bearing on the quality of the book I purchased which was in great condition, as opposed to the last book I bought; which, was in a state of condition not mentioned on the site. It was marked, dented, and in bad repair. I didn't comment on it at the time and was going to let it go until your company kept bugging me for a review. I have one more semester after this and will probably purchase my books from Amazon as it comes as the good out-weighs the bad.

This book was excellent for use in my recent communications class. Well laid out and easy to follow. Quite a lot of information but it was easy to understand. The lab sections at the end of the game were really interesting.
