This manual focuses on the use of psychotherapy for dysthymic disorder, or chronic depression. It describes how to adapt interpersonal pyschotherapy (IPT) - a proven, time-limited therapy that has benefited patients who have other mood disorders and psychiatric syndromes - to treat dysthymic disorder. After discussing the characteristics of dysthymic disorder, the basic principles of interpersonal psychotherapy, and the available treatment data, the book offers strategies for working with this disorder. It also includes examples which illustrate how to use this treatment approach, and an appendix with patient education materials, the IPT Problem Area Rating Scale, and the IPT Outcome Scale.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"[T]his book provides a useful addition to the armamentarium of any psychotherapist dealing with this historically difficult-to-treat disorder. This is particularly important in this era of managed care, which places such a heavy emphasis on clear-cut goals for time-limited treatments."- "Bulletin of the Menninger Clinic"

5.0 out of 5 stars Helpful treatment manual and patient guide, August 25, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Dysthymic Disorder (Hardcover)
This book addresses the treatment of chronic depression, a frequently underdiagnosed, misunderstood, and mistreated psychiatric disorder. The book is both a treatment guide for psychotherapists and an explanatory guide for interested patients. (There is an unfortunate shortage of popular literature about chronic depression.)
