2.0 out of 5 stars Falls short
Its too bad. I was actually pretty excited about this game initially. Why not? It has a pretty intriguing story, admirable spooky, misty graphics, and a variety of cool playable characters. So why is this game such a dissapointment?
There is no stategy or gamemanship required, whatsoever! To make it through the entire game (which I did) requires nothing more...

Hunter: The Reckoning is an addictive, fun game for Mature players do to violence, gore and mild language.

The jist of the game is a simple hack-and-slash made even better by the graphics capabilities of the Xbox.

The Good:
Graphics are strong, and though the lighting is dim their is a brightness option in the game. The enemies/enviroment look great, and the blood effects are nicely done.
For a hack-and-slash there are enough suprises to keep things interesting.
The enemies may start out stupidly walking into your guns, but by the middle of the game they are quick, agile and shoot back, requiring you to develope some strategy if you want to survive.
4 Playable characters with their own unique strengths and weaknesses.
Special weapons to pick up along the way.
Sounds are done well.
Fun, Arcade feel.

The Bad:
The game play is challenging, but the boss characters are nearly impossible. And there are NO cheats! This game can be really hard, and the bosses can be really frustrating, even while going at it multiplayer.
The introduction of Edges (spells) is ok, but there are so few of them, and only one character has a heal Edge.
Would be nice if your character's Hit Meter/Edge Meter would slowly refill over time.
Continues should be easier to get, especially in Multiplayer.

The Ugly:
Your characters cannot aim up or down effectively, which means that you have to be on level ground with your enemies in order to hit them. This can be really annoying when fighting on hilly terrain, or over broken concrete, where it will seem your bullets pass right through your enemies. You can also not shoot through gates or over fences, and your character can obviously jump high, but not over anything.

5.0 out of 5 stars Monster Mash, July 19, 2002
This review is from: Hunter: The Reckoning (CD-ROM)
Second only to Halo, this is my favorite game for the Xbox. There are better looking games and more revolutionary games, but for sheer fun, especially multiplayer fun, this is definitely worth having, or at least renting.

By now you know the concept: Gauntlet type melee set in the White Wolf universe. Hunter is non-stop action and is one of the first gmaes in a long time that allows you to pull out those extra controllers and play with friends. The multiplayer elements is highly addictive and requires a lot of team work and communication. Since it's not a first person-shooter, the action isn't divided into tiny screens and while it can get crowded on screen, especially with dozens of zombies chasing after you, it's still easy to see what's going on.

The graphics are excellent, the sound, and music are well done and the characters are really cool, I just wish there were more of them. Some of the later levels are extremely difficult and require a lot more tactics than you might be used to. The early levels are just hack and slash goodness. There's something to be said for both.

Those of you who actually play with friends or family should give this one a gander. There seems to be a flood of good sinle-player games on the market but very few multi-player. If nothing else Hunter has filled a gap that desperately needed filling.

5.0 out of 5 stars This game is fun and full of action, February 28, 2003

I really liked this game and definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys third person games. It's a typical Hack and Slash game with a great storyline. THe graphics are a plus, there are a good selection of enemies to fight off, and U can play multiplayer for hours. I think anyone interested should at least rent it and then you will be hooked and will want to buy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Strangely Addictive, January 27, 2003

"Hunter" isn't the most fun game to play. It's not the best looking. It's not really the most challenging. And it doesn't require a lot of thought.

And yet you won't be able to stop playing it.

Yes, "Hunter" falls right in as one of those games that, in spite of its shortfalls, is just a blast to play. You basically go through, slashing and shooting your way through over twenty levels of zombie-filled madness. You can choose from four hunters, each with unique weapons, but also with the ability to pick up other weapons along the way. Each Hunter also has different special abilities, called "edges", which enable you to perform special attacks, improve your skills for a limited amount of time, or heal yourself. Your character's skills also can improve with experience or by stepping on special symbols on the ground.

The gameplay is pretty straightforward. The left thumbstick moves your character and your right thumbstick aims. This enables you to move in one direction while aiming and firing in another, which is very useful when you have a huge group of zombies going for your head. The difference in the characters dictates how you play. If your character is strong, you might want to use your melee attacks. If your character is fast, you probably should use your guns instead.

The levels are, for the most part, massive and jammed with enemies. Most of the level goals aren't anything harder than "find the hostages" or "keep the girl alive". There's surprisingly a wide range of foes for you to shoot, from zombies to huge, lumbering beasts. The fighting, while staying pretty much exactly the same throughout the game, never gets boring just because there are so many enemies on the screen at the same time. You have to see the entire screen to stay alive. There are also a few bosses to pique your interest, but, for the most part, the battles only require you to dodge and shoot.

Graphically, "Hunter" looks good. The characters are very detailed and the environments are well rendered. The only thing holding "Hunter" back graphically is that, most of the time, the characters are so small that you can't see the detail. Soundwise, there's nothing special here.

The only thing I didn't like about "Hunter" was that, while the story was interesting, you only got cutscenes every few levels, so you can easily forget what happened before. There also seem to be a lot of events that appear to be pivotal to the game, but then are forgotten completely, like they never happened.

Overall, as I said, "Hunter" is not one of the greatest games in history, but it's a fun and strangely addicting game that will keep your Xbox buzzing for hours.

Hunter the Reckoning hasnt gotten much hype but i played this game today and it is awesome. This game is up there with the greats such as Halo and Max Payne. For anyone who owns an xbox , you have to get this game. The storyline is great. The graphics are unbelievable and there is so much to do in the game. Believe me... once you have started playing this game you wont be able to put it down until you have beaten it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth a look . . ., November 14, 2002

This is a classic hack-n-slash, kill everything in sight game. You can choose one of four characters (1-4 players), each with different abilities. Game play is fairly basic: survive, meet a few objectives, and beat the bosses. Hunter does a good job of showcasing the graphical features of the Xbox with lots of special effects, and has pretty good sound.

On the down side, the game can get tedious with the sheer number of zombie monsters you have to kill. I would have liked to see more variety in the zombies -- you can only kill so many tattered-blue-jeans-denim-shirt zombies before you crave for one in a t-shirt.

These complaints aside, the game is definitely worth a look.

4.0 out of 5 stars A TRUE review (in my own opinion, of course :-), July 22, 2002

Okay...I bought this game the day it came out, and thought that I would lend my review. Some of the reviews here are from people who didn't know what they were getting in to when they purchased/rented the game, and gave it unfair reviews. While the person reviewing the game didn't enjoy it, and might give it a low score, it was generally because they didn't know what to expect from the game.

First off, this game was developed to be a multi-player game. For any of you who remember the old games like Gauntlet (or the newer versions of Gauntlet), this game is basically a newer, more updated game of the same type. You get up to 3 friends (for the most fun you really want all 4 players in) and basically just spend the next few (many?) hours hacking away at the undead. The action certainly does get repititious, but it is not mindless.

To beat the game you will need all four players to be mindful of their actions, and everyone has to work together. For instance, the Judge character and the police-woman character (forget her "type" right now) are both VERY multi-player driven characters. The judge can use his "Edge" (magic, in typical terms) to lay out a whole host of enemies; however, he has to use it when it is necessary, and he has to be sure and get the most enemies he can. To do this, the entire group should work together to get the enemies lined up for him. The police-woman is the healer of the group, and everyone has to recognize where she is at all times so that the group can be the most efficient with her healing powers.

I have beat the game in single-player and two-player mode (with my wife), played thru almost the entire game with three-player, and played thru parts with 4-player. Do not buy this game for the single-player portion of it. You will be disappointed. While it is fun, the entire game takes around 8-10 hours to beat, and you'll wish you had rented it. However, if you have a few friends who like to get together and enjoy barking commands at and helping one another, you DEFINITELY have to get this game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like Resident Evil for Xbox!, June 11, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Hunter: The Reckoning (CD-ROM)
This is one of the best hack'n slash game on the Xbox. It's definetly worth buying if you like Resident Evil or House of the Dead. The graphics are very good and add to the scary environments. The best part about the game is facing off against hordes of monsters and mowing them down with guns and melee weapons such as battle axes and chain saws. The game starts easy and progressively gets harder, but not so hard you can't eventually defeat whatever you are fighting. The game is a lot of fun with multiplayer but the monsters are also harder to kill. It's better to play with more than two people if you can because the game gets so hard in multiplayer.

There are quite a few weapons that are all sweet to use and monsters to blow away piece by piece. If you at all don't like graphic games then this isn't your game. There is an option to turn the blood off but then it wouldn't be the same. There can be up to 30 monsters on screen at one time and once you get done massacreing all of them there is always puddles of blood everywhere.

So if you don't mind blood and love killing zombies and other freaks o'nature then you don't want to pass up this game!

5.0 out of 5 stars The first truly great XBox game, May 23, 2002
By
This review is from: Hunter: The Reckoning (CD-ROM)
This is the best purchase you can make for the XBox yet. It's better than Halo, better than Max Payne, this thing is it. It came out yesterday and I couldn't wait so I ran out and bought it. It fulfilled every expectation I had for it. I have never seen so many enemies on a screen at one time with such good graphics. Finally, a really, really good reason to own an XBox.

5.0 out of 5 stars reason alone to take advantage of the price-slashed XBOX, May 21, 2002

This game alone is reason to buy an Xbox. I preordered from the Interplay Web site and rec'd a free DVD of Night of the Living Dead. I specifically bought a lawn chair and a 30-pack of beer and left work early to play it once it arrived and all I can say is: This game does to video games what Romero's dead trilogy did to movies, therefore it is appropriate that the special edition DVD was included free. This one is a buy, buy, buy.
