I have been using flashing light technology as a protective measure for many years in rural Pennsylvania where predators occupy air and land in abundance.
I was so excited when this unit/design came out (I read about it in Backyard Poultry issue Feb/Mar 2011) that I had to get them!
I have a free range poultry operation and also a small apiary (honey bee yard), so protection at dusk and night is paramount. Chickens go into protected coop buildings at night, so they are at less risk than are the ducks and waterfowl which often have fallen prey to night stalkers.
One of my test sites is the pond, where many animals come at night to drink and hunt the shore line... put a solar nite eyes unit along this predator path and the traffic stops! No fresh tracks after placing one unit at a couple of feet above the ground.
Every year, I plant 20 new trees on my land and without fail, deer have come and browsed all the buds and in some cases, taken a young sapling right to the ground... only to start over next growing season. The solar nite eyes unit has two holes for mounting... it occurred to me that I could hook a bundgie into these holes and wrap it around young trees at "deer height"... this flashing light discouraged the deer... haven't seen fresh tracks for days now! Also, mounting with a bungie cord, I can immediately move the unit from tree to post or adjust the height/direction without screwing or nailing anything into the tree! I love that advantage... some trees are too young and delicate to have screws or nails put into them.
As a photographer, I was traveling with a PA Apiary Inspector and witnessed first hand, the damage a bear can do to honey bee hives in a single visit.Read more ›

Had a Big problem with nocturnal visitors wanting some chicken. Since nite eyes we haven't had anyone stop by for a visit. The only thing we occasionly do is wipe the dust off the top sensor or else it works during the day.

Solar Nite Eyes need direct sunlight or it won't charge. I own several Nite Guard units and did a side by side comparison over several days with both units mounted in my woods. The Nite Guard units take a charge and flashed all night long. The Solar Nite Eyes unit took almost no charge and flashed for less than an hour in the same spot. Mounting the Solar Nite eyes unit in direct sun makes all the difference as it charges fine but that's not where I need it. As far as protection, they both do about the same thing but the bottom line - if you need a predator protection system where it won't receive much direct sun buy the a Nite Guard.

I ordered several of these to deter night time predators from my chicken coop/run and as someone else said-- so far, so good. I am very impressed by how well they work, for a solar-powered device, and how easy they are to place. They have a magnetic backing, so I don't have to screw them into anything--they attach securely right onto the wire fencing or the brackets of the door. Because of this, they can also be moved easily and placed in different locations each night(which should be done so that predators don't realize it's just a fixed light).
I have a tractor coop that moves around the yard and is not always in the sunniest location. However, I have never had a problem with these charging, because if I think they won't get enough daylight to fully charge (although hold a charge MUCH longer than most solar lights/lanterns I've used)I simply remove them during the day and place them in a sunny location for a few hours. Even cloudy, overcast days have not diminished their performance. They come on at dusk (amazingly at pretty much the exact time the chickens are getting back into the coop for the night!) and are still flashing away when I go outside at sunrise to let the girls out for the day.
I also like that there are two lights per unit, as opposed to other similar devices that have only one light bulb.

I don't have any evidence yet as to whether this will keep deer out of my flowers because they are still dry and dormant, however it has worked well as an (inadvertent) fake security alarm! It sits on my porch and I've had two friends who did not want to go on the porch for fear of 'setting it off'. So if you find they don't work on 4-legged varmints, they may work on the 2-legged variety.

I put several around my duck house and thought they must be working. Then 5 ducks got shredded and they were being picked off regularly until I just locked them up. Then started catching raccoons and chasing fox. I left the lights out but I now use a game camera to watch for any nosy parkers. As it turns out they don't scare ANYTHING. Not raccoons, cats, dogs, groundhogs, hawks, dear, foxes, absolutely nothing. They don't even scare my ducks. The final insult came when I photographed a fox using one for a scratch post then just standing next to it staring at my ducks in the coop. Seriously I had high hopes for these but don't waste your money.
