poppin' and burnin'..., October 17, 2011
As Wes Montgomery said "Tal was poppin' and burnin'..."
This would certainly be in the category of "essential". Great listening and inspiring if you play guitar or any instrument.
And what a selection of tunes!
This is a Japanese import, the jewel case edition described above; I got it several years ago. It was expensive but I had to have it. First time I had this was on a Japanese LP edition, with terrible fidelity. Then I tracked down an original recording of it with good fidelity but a few scratches.
I was delighted to get it on cd when it became available. The fidelity is superb.
From what I understand, it has become hard to get this on cd, unless you want to buy the complete Mosaic set. I had most of it but not all of it but I got a great deal on it so decided to spring for the Mosaic set.
But Tal is at the peak of his powers here. All of his fifties recordings on Norgran are excellent.
This is kind of unusual in that Tal is with a drummer here, the magnificent Stan Levey. Autumn Leaves is solo with some sort of cool dropped tuning that Tal sometimes used.
This was issued in 1955 as Fascinating Rhythm. It was recorded in Los Angeles with West Coast guys. Here is recording info...
