Although the number and acceptance of interracial marriages have increased over time, both among black men who marry white women and black women who marry white men (a less studied area), Dr. Judice's analysis shows how race remains an important factor in selecting a marriage partner and in managing married life. The author highlights important distinctions between the experiences of black men who marry white women and black women who marry white men. She shows that although both are "interracial couples," their experiences are not the same.
Dr. Judice's analysis is strengthened by her thorough overview of the historical context of interracial marriages, and she shows how these marriages have been legislated and have evolved over time. For example, Dr. Judice examines laws that banned interracial marriages and presents arguments showing that such laws were mostly intended to keep black men and white women separated since historically, the opposite --- keeping white men separate from black women was never a major factor in American society.
For academicians and others interested in understanding the impact of race in interracial marriages, this book is a must have. Interracial Marriages is a clearly written, easy to read, extensive analysis that takes the reader inside the lives and experiences of the interracially married couples studied, making the book an illuminating experience throughout.

Not at all what I expected, it reads like a boring textbook...I thought it would be filled with personal accounts, stories and interviews with couples of various backgrounds. Read morePublished 18 months ago by patty watty
