Editorial Reviews

2012 album from the Country/Folk singer/songwriter. Intersection is not an album of resolution or closure; it's an album about difficulties, about anger, about things that slip away and things that explode. Griffith is beloved as a songwriter but also as someone who unearths others' songs and brings them to light. On Intersection, there are five covers including ones by Loretta Lynn and Blaze Foley. Recorded at her Nashville home, she surrounds herself by a crack team of musicians and backing singers.

Well, the Last of the True Believers is back, and she's got another really good album. I'm the kind of Nanci Fan that can't get enough of "Love at the Five & Dime" and "There's A Light Beyond These Woods", just to give you an idea of where I come from, and the album starts with a familiar feel with "Bethlehem Steel", and by the time I settled in for "Never Going Back", it felt like I was slipping into classic Nanci Griffith mode. This is Nanci doing what she does best--lyrics that veer between sassy and heartbreaking, sometimes without any room in between, and simple, singable melodies played with conviction. Playing is assured, and sounds great, with the exception of a strange percussion effect on "Hell No (I'm not alright)". While I can enjoy the sentiment in the song, that odd percussion kinda jolts me out of the moment. That is pretty much my only complaint, however, about this otherwise excellent album. This probably won't replace "Other Voices" or as my favorite, but this is easily as good overall as "Flyer", and at moments, it rises to some of her greatest music. This is music to enjoy while you are on your back porch, preferably while you've got something on the grill and a sunset melting down while you're drinking something cold with good friends. That's what I intend to do.

3.0 out of 5 stars STILL GOING STRONG June 2, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Nanci Griffith has always been one of my favorite country/folk artists. Anytime she puts new music out is reason to celebrate.

Griffith has about as much in common with current pop music as a forest has with a flashing neon sign. But, that's a good thing. There's an honesty and uncompromising quality to her no-frills, basic, tradition-laced singing and songwriting (and the tasteful covers that she chooses).

This isn't her best album by any means, but it's still solid Griffith. Her work has a consistency to it that few others can match.

My favorites on INTERSECTION include th cover "Waiting On A Dark Eyed Girl," her own "Hell No (I'm Not Alright)," the cover "If I Could Only Fly," and Loretta Lynn's "High On A Mountain Top."

May Griffith keep giving us the pleasure of her music for many more years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars A kaleidoscope of emotions May 7, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Intersections is a wonderful album. Nanci's voice has never been better as her songs reflect every emotion possible. Each musical gem, whether penned by her or carefully chosen by her, is sung beautifully with tender love and care. She shows anger and rebellion in Hell No, humor and remorse in Bad Seed, and sadness and determination in Never Going Back. This is one of Nanci's best and I have thoroughly enjoyed it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Less passionate July 29, 2012
Format:MP3 Music
For me, one of the great aspects of Nanci Griffith's music can be summed up with the word- passion, but it seems a bit lacking in this CD. While I realize that it is a mistake to try to use one word to describe an artist with such depth and musical color, it really does help review this and a couple of Nanci's other recent releases. Such great success always has the danger of relaxing drive and passion, and I suspect Griffith might be struggling with these very things.

In her earlier works, I could always look beyond her strong measure of politicizing or social judgements, because of how her true passions about those things were helping to drive such remarkable lyrics, melodies and phrasing. Even when her lyrics would smack of strong prejudice, expressing hateful feelings toward other people because she perceived them to be hateful, for instance; that depth of sheer talent sang out, and one could soak in the beautiful music that this rare artist can produce.

With this latest offering "Intersection", my feeling is that the masterful artist is still there; but the passion is somewhat faded, with so many of the songs on this CD just going through the motions. But, who can blame artists after so much wonderful music and millions of miles on the road? I think this is fairly common, and I will be waiting to see if Nanci manages to re-stoke the fires.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great to Have Nanci Singing Songs Like This October 13, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Listening to this album for the first time brought back thoughts of the first time I heard "Last of the True Believers", with a little bit of "Blue Roses from the Moon". Nanci's personal touch with her songwriting about relationships - their nature, the feelings that dwell within them when troubles and doubts exist - are as great as ever. Her band is also awesome - Pete Kennedy, Maura Kennedy and Pat McInerney.

Her most powerful song for me in terms of emotion is "Bad Seed" about a girl who lashes out at the father who didn't adore his daughter in the same way as she adored him and the hurtful term he used to call her. The song echoes so true for those of us still wondering why parents hurt the children they're supposed to love.

Nanci's best works have always been those that resonate deep inside the listener. This album carries on the tradition of her early albums and it is well worth a listen. I've been waiting for a while for an album this good!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Waning September 26, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
3 1/2 stars.... although this is a better Nanci than her previous two releases, she still falls short of of her more stellar cds. Her Texas spirit has lost it's edge. This cd just seems a little flat to me, musicianship included. It could be that this reflects her advancing age and maybe if the music sounds like she's tired....she just might be. The best song is "just Another Morning Here" a second release of one of her earlier MCI recordings. Nice tune.

I have always loved Nanci Griffith's music. This one was aptly named as it differs somewhat from her first efforts. She still has a great voice and sings with even more emotion.

When you want some honky-tonk country songs, Griffin delivers. It reflects the best of music at the intersection of music.

The CD arrived quickly in pristine condition.
