Editorial Reviews

The second Monolake record, originally released in 1999, now newly digitally remastered. Monolake is an open project dedicated to computer-generated music, founded in 1995 by Berlin-based Robert Henke and Gerhard Behles. If you are looking for German minimal techno done with maximum attention to detail and true dedication to sound, Monolake is one of the first projects to look at. After being highly influenced by the exploding minimal dub techno scene of Berlin during the mid-'90s and after early releases on Chain Reaction, the project soon started to develop its own trademark sound, a more complex and rich flavor with an abundance of minimal while still keeping a constant rhythmical pulse as the main force behind every track. Interstate offers a lovely bouquet of deep flowery textures, floating around complex grooves, embedded in all sorts of atmospheric background noises and field recordings. Interstate is light and summery, breathing the warm air of happiness and its musical density and abundance makes it an outstanding release even ten years later. The CD has been out of print for a couple of years and this re-release is housed in a newly-designed digipack and with a new mastering. The mastering, executed with outstanding dedication by Rashad Becker, is more than just a technical process, it is an aesthetic statement. While the album itself is very digital and clean, the new mastering has been done entirely with selected analog equipment, resulting in a crunchier, darker and warmer atmosphere. Monolake -- Interstate, an essential release and a must-have item for everyone into electronic music.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Showcase for the "definitive" Monolake style. February 21, 2001
Format:Audio CD
After Robert's Chain Reaction release "HongKong," comes this. Even though both HongKong and Gravity are perhaps more essential (each for their own reasons), Interstate has enough techno-beats, dubby scapes and blips and bleepage to satisfy anyone who likes any kind of electronic music. Taking the dubbier and more esoteric moments from HongKong, the thick dronage of Gravity, and the glitches and the "quasi-natural" sounds of Gobi; you then have the main bulk of this album.
HongKong is perhaps more laid back and melodic, with Gravity being generally more "maximal" / thick / layered etc. Interstate is therefore an appropriate name as it occupies a space in Henke's musical evolution between both of these albums - not too chilled, but never too busy.
If you like the ambient/glitch-dub stuff that's going around at the moment, then you can't go wrong here.

5.0 out of 5 stars May the beat be with you. February 17, 2013

Monolake = cutting edge, future sound, musical architecture. Dreamlike, this an atmospheric, ambient, experience. When we are visited by aliens, or humanoids from the future (slipping back in time to explore their past), you can be sure that they'll be playing Monolake in their UFOs.
Listen long and prosper. May the beat be with you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant May 7, 1999
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Electronic music is really doing good these days and having people like Monolake is a good sign. This CD is simply stunning. New and innovative things are the best things about "Interstate". I also remind new Monolake "fans" to pay attention to Robert Henke's solo project.
