Pathos and Romantic,

I found this CD very dark. Duh! But every time I listen to it, it takes me to a different world. The first song, Libera Me is soooo beautiful. You can actually feel the sadness and whole darkness of it. The reason I even wacthed the movie in the first place was because of the music. Although, the very last song kills the rest of it. When I'm listening to the whole CD and when I come to the end, the Guns N' Roses song, kills the whole atmosphere. That is my only complaint about this CD. Everything else is Perfect!!!

Haunting Excellence,
By "neocrow" (Portland, Oregon USA) - See all my reviews

This score... inappropriately called a soundtrack is wonderful. It captures the ambiance and quiet evil of the film and the character of Lestat was well as Louis' struggle to undo what he has become. Haunting is a word I would choose to describe this work best, because that is exactly what it is. Try turning out the lights and listening to this CD, and you will know what I mean.

Something Missing,

Goldenthal's music is superb and very fitting in capturing the mood of the movie, it also stands well by itself on this excellent soundtrack. The song 'Libera Me'is especially haunting. I was however, distressed to note that the many wonderful classical songs from the movie were not included; especially the Hadyn sonata that Lestat plays. Perhaps these songs would have not fit on this CD...but it is not complete without them.

Beautiful, romantic, dark, but....,

This score perfectly captures dark atmosphere of the movie. Some tracks are haunting, some are more peaceful, but they somehow belong together. Elliot Goldenthal did a great job to create one of the best scores of the '90. Listen to in the dark and you will appreciate this masterpiece even more. Only reason I rated it 4 stars is because of forgettable Guns N' Roses' cover song. Do yourself a favor and stop playing after 18 track is finished.

Haunting, Beautiful Perfection,
By Juri Arisugawa (Brooklyn, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Interview With The Vampire: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
I am a big fan of film scores, and I don't think I've ever heard a score that so perfectly captures the mood of a film as well as this one--before or since. Every single track is a brilliant interpretation of the deep range of emotions in this film, lovingly depicting the feelings of the characters: from Lestat's whimsy decadance, to Claudia's rage, Louis' despair at the monster he's become. The haunting baroque-influenced songs are simply beautiful, and do a wonderful job of setting the atmosphere of 18th century New Orleans, and then 19th century Paris. Elliot Goldenthal is a talented composer, and this is quite simply some of his best work.I think people who criticize the Guns and Roses cover of Sympathy For the Devil as being out of place are utterly missing the point of the song and why it was in the movie. It's the perfect cap to the soundtrack, for one simple reason: the lyrics are completely, utterly Lestat. Being a huge fan of the Vampire Chronicles I always hoped they'd use the song in a movie based on one of the books. Context is everything, and when viewed within the proper context it makes perfect sense. It's clearly meant to represent a transition to a new phase in Lestat's life, the evolution of the old world aristocrat into modern rock star, and Neil Jordan even says as much in his Director's Commentary on the DVD. The final scene of Lestat driving over the Golden Gate Bridge, having just bitten Daniel Malloy, is nowhere in the novel but Jordan included it in the movie to give a taste of where Lestat was heading in the future. It's fine enough not to like the song on its own merits (personally, I love the GnR version), but I think people need to understand *why* the song was included in the movie and thus the soundtrack before they jump all over it.

A Special Edition!!!!!!!,
By Damien Thorn "Alexander" (woodward, ok usa) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Interview With The Vampire: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
i looove this score. its my favorite cd! but there is not enough! there desperately needs to be a special edition or something like the those of the star wars with practically all of the music from the film on the cd and with the piano songs heard in the film as well as the tracks placed in chronological film order. the guns and roses song doesn't bother me but i think i can be taken out if there is to be a second release of the cd. also digitally remastering the score wouldn't be as bad. i think its a fantabulous concept for goldenthal to do. this score resulted in his fisrt academy award nomination and golden globe nomination. pay homage to this wonderful score elliot. i love the music but there needs to be more of it. edspecially the main theme we hear in the first half of the movie. some people complain about the chopiness due to missing ques and misplacement of tracks. i think people who don't really appreciate the score as it is now will get the full interview with the vampire experience if a special edition with waay more music inserted, tracks in order, and digital remastering were to happen. it would be a blessing to this score!

Vampire Psychology Unveiled In Music,
This review is from: Interview With The Vampire: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
Having read every novel of the Vampire Chronicles and continuously re-examining the psychology makeup of both films, Interview With The Vampire and Queen Of The Damned, I can say for certain that this soundtrack well depicts the changing times (18th to 20th century Europe and North America) in the film. "Libera Me", the stunningly beautiful opening number creates an incredibly "vampiric" mood and setting. Elliot Goldenthal, researched very well, the changing eras, the vampires Louis, Lestat and Claudia and their visits; journeys and creates incredible climaxes for each of the characters in the film and the situations they undertake. "Tarantella", for example is well utilized when Lestat dances with Claudia's mother's corpse in celebration that Louis has finally taken human life for a blood kill. A beautiful soundtrack, that travels through the ages and times. A journey for the mind...and soul!

A dark, haunting, beautiful score!,
By Scott Roy "rocco83" (Rochester, MI United States) - See all my reviews

I had never really heard of Elliot Goldenthal before I came across this soundtrack. I actually saw the movie first, years after it was released in theaters. When I first saw it, the music in the opening titles caught my attention. It's one of the best choral pieces of music I've heard in a horror movie in my entire life. That literally made me want to buy the CD right then and there. It also made me a little mad that I hadn't seen the movie sooner and known what great music my soundtrack collection was lacking. The second track on the CD is a wonderfully strong track as well. It's a dark, lush, forboding theme that is very eerie but beautiful. You get the sense of walking through thick fog on a dark cobblestone street at night. It's a wonderful theme that I believe should have appeared more throughout the entire soundtrack. However, Goldenthal has a few other themes he works with, including a loud squeeling theme dominated by brass. It's really much better sounding than I can explain it. 'The scent of death' is a very quiet, but creepy track dominated by low notes on the woodwinds. If you've seen the movie, much of this soundtrack will remind you of specific parts of the movie, conjuring up certain images with certain cues. Many people say that this CD was ruined by the last track, the Guns 'n Roses song, but I think it all just boils down to personal taste. I myself don't particularly like the band, so I just turn off the CD when it get to that track. It's really just one little drawback to an otherwise great CD!

As a fan of Elliot Goldenthal, I have to say this is one of my favorite scores by him. If you're not familiar with Goldenthal, this is a wonderful soundtrack to introduce yourself to his music. Goldenthal has the ability to create stories with his music and this is no exception. Even without seeing the movie we can see a story unfolding around his music. I gave it four stars simply because of the last track. It's a horrible end to a wonderful CD.
