Editorial Reviews

Notes on Majority Rule Interviews With David Frost and Emergency Numbers (2009 LP repress): I can't say I look back too much... In fact, I think it's safe to say that at any point, I genuinely feel like I've only been alive for 3 years. It's fuckin' retarded. Anything beyond that just kind of goes into deep storage and gets pulled out only on a rare frozen moment of introspection.

However, I can say with complete certainty that my absolute favorite time in life to reflect on centers around the period in which these two albums came out. It was without a doubt the most pure and altruistic time in the lives of the band, myself, our friends, their bands, and the things we were committed to. Anyone active in the DC/NoVA punk/hardcore scene of the time would probably tell you the same. When I think about these records in particular, I'm reminded of a rare moment in life where I actively felt a part of a thriving (local) community. It was very exciting waking up every day and knowing that you were going to see all of your friends and work on so many projects before returning to your bed (if you even went to sleep that day!). Things felt urgent and everyone's actions and behaviors followed suit.

In many ways, Majority Rule was the anchor for everyone during those times. Starting with the record release for Interviews With David Frost at the Wilson Center (w/pg.99, Darkest Hour, Waifle, and City of Caterpillar opening!), Majority Rule shows became these pulsing beacons of community pride where hundreds and hundreds of people would come to every show, know every single word to every song, and altogether combine to create a truly transcendent experience that left us all with hope? Motivation? Cathartic satisfaction? These three guys and their music definitely did something special for and to all of us living in the area at the time.

What's most amazing to me in the present day is how well both of these albums held up. Repressing them doesn't feel at all like a novelty or nostalgic kitsch in the slightest. I still get goosebumps. I still believe in what's going on from the point the needle touches down all the way until it picks back up. It's my sincerest hope that a lot of folks that weren't into DIY punk/hardcore back then (or maybe missed out on the whole DC/NoVA revival of the early 00's) will be able to pull even a sliver of what these records have already given so many people. You're in for a treat...

5.0 out of 5 stars Majority Rule- Interviews with David Frost, July 18, 2001

This review is from: Interviews With David Frost (Audio CD)
With their debut cd Majority Rule have mastered their sound to a point that takes most bands two or three albums to do. Majority Rule play music that would be tough to classify as hardcore. The songs feature just as many blast beats and screamy vocals as they do jazzy bass solos, amazing drum rolls, and hypnotic guitar effects. Although Interviews... bears almost no resemblence to any of the previously released 7"s, fans of the older stuff will find some familliar territory. To compare them to anyone would be to sell them short, but fans of hydrahead, lovitt, or magic bullet should check them out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing..., April 7, 2003

This album changed my whole outlook on music. Majority Rule is probably the first hardcore punk band i ever saw live... i was blown away. This album reaches levels of sheer beauty never before attained in by the genre. The screams are passionate and intense, the guitars sound on fire, the bass can go from overdriven and heavy to almost jazzy, and the drums... Pat is one of the best drummers i have ever heard, in any style. If you listen to any hardcore (Converge especially) buy this album. These guys don't have much of a fan base yet but they deserve it.

5.0 out of 5 stars just awesome stuff, July 25, 2011

what can i say.....i dont really get into screamo or crazy fast punk electro emo junk or whatever the kids are into these days. never have been really. my musical tastes are pretty simple : i like what sounds good to me i guess. i somehow heard one of these guys other songs off of Emergency numbers awhile back and was immeadieatly caught off gaurd and honestly blown away at many aspects of this bands music. im 35 years old, and have listened to quite a bit of different stuff all through my life, and this was unlike anything i had ever heard before. and it was good, it was very good.
to describe MR's music is something i cant do. for one, im not really much of a music player or artist at all, so technically, i couldnt say something like "yeah, and the guitar is good here because he uses this scale" or "the drummers 6/4 time is really unique" and so on. all i can say is honestly how i hear the music and what it makes me feel like. and thats honest.
so, the music is really pretty. weird, i know, to hear the word pretty used when describing a "punk" band, but it is. some of these songs have breakdowns that are just plain buetiful. dynamics are all over the place here, another weird thing to admit when talking about punk, as there are generally two distinct forms of dynamics in the genre, loud and fast. well, MR has plenty of that going for it but a lot of tempo change and a lot of quiet, intricate layering going on as well. as a whole, it works really well together, and these guys seem to pour their hearts into each song. this is really, really good music. it makes you feel a lot.
when i did further research into this band, i found out that when they were making this music, they were also very young. like prety much teenagers. wow. that blew me away. this music has a much older feel to it. its not like some kids blowing off smoke and whaling on crappy instruments. this is the music of seasoned veterans playing through high end guitars and drum kits.

you have to just expirience it for yourself.
